THE STARTING FIVE
(1) Saturday is Senior Day for five Marauders, who will play their final game in Pucillo Gymnasium. The group includes four-year player
Mike Seibert, graduate student
C.J. Scott,
Jim Kelleher,
Rob Wyley and
Demond Vance. Unfortunately for the seniors, the 2011-12 season will not extend into the postseason as the Marauders were eliminated from PSAC Tournament contention with Wednesday's 80-69 loss at East Stroudsburg and West Chester's win. Millersville shot 53.8 percent from the field but allowed East Stroudsburg to shoot 12-of-21 from 3-point range. ESU also converted 16 Millersville turnovers into 30 points.
(2) Seibert will go down as one of the most accurate shooters in Millersville history. The guard currently ranks first in career free throw percentage at .826 (199-of-241). He holds a slight lead over MU Hall of Fame inductee Lance Gelnett (.820). Seibert also ranks eighth in career 3-pointers made with 152. At one point, he had made a 3-pointer in 30 consecutive games and has made a 3-pointer in 48 of the last 53 games.
(3) Vance, in his second year with the program, led the team in scoring during the 2010-11 team, and is coming off of a season high 24 points against ESU. He scored 12.2 points per game a season ago, and has made a big impact on Millersville's success since he returned in January. When Vance rejoined the roster, Millersville was 3-9. Since, Millersville is 6-5--all of the wins coming against the PSAC East. Millersville is also 5-1 at home during that stretch. Millersville averaged 70.8 points per game pre-Vance and 75.4 points per game with Vance in the lineup.
(4) Elijah Obade continued his solid play with his seventh double-double in the last eight games and ninth of the season. Obade ranks second in the PSAC in rebounding and first in blocked shots. With 51 blocks, he is one of only eight players in school history with 50 blocks in a season, and his 2.3 per game is tied for the best per-game average in school history. Obade upped his rebounding average to 10.0 per game. He is on pace to be the first Marauder to average double-digit rebounds in a season since Tommy Gaines in 1987-88. With 51 blocked shots, he already has the ninth-most in a single season.
(5) Mansfield has had Millersville's number in recent years, winning seven consecutive games including three in a row at Pucillo Gymnasium. Mansfield defeated the Marauders 82-70 on Jan. 28 behind five players in double figures. Joe Bell led the Mountaineers with 20 points. Mansfield shot 52.6 percent and Millersville shot 38.5 percent.
THE MOUNTAINEERS
· Mansfield has dropped seven of the last nine games, but one of those victories in that stretch came against Millersville on Jan. 28. The Mountaineers reached the NCAA Division II Tournament a year ago but has struggled to replace their three leading scorers. Freshman Joe Bell has to be one of the front-runners for PSAC East Freshman of the Year. He's averaging a team-leading 15.5 points per game and has scored in double-figures in 14 consecutive games. He's also grabbed at least six rebounds in 16 games. In the last five games, Bell has 17 offensive rebounds. He's a 56.4 percent shooter and has converted at least 50 percent of its field goals in eight consecutive games.
Chuck Harper is the only other Mountaineer averaging double figures. Josh Dupuy ranks third in the PSAC in assists per game with 5.1. As a team, Mansfield ranks first in the PSAC in steals with 9.1 per game. In the first meeting, Millersville committed 16 turnovers and nine of those came off of Mansfield steals.
