Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Back on Jan. 21, Kutztown handed Millersville its worst loss of the season. Saturday at Pucillo Gymnasium, the Marauders exacted some revenge and dealt Kutztown a 77-67 defeat behind four players in double figures.
Millersville (9-13, 7-11 PSAC) has now won three out of four and four consecutive home games. It was also the Marauders' first win over Kutztown since 2008, ending a run of seven consecutive defeats to the Golden Bears. For Kutztown, which is in a four-team chase for the PSAC East title, the loss was devastating as it fell out of the first-place tie with East Stroudsburg.
Jaymes Miller led the Marauders in scoring for a second-straight game. He totaled a game-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Elijah Obade recorded his sixth double-double in the last seven games with 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. His 16 boards were the most by a Marauder since
Rob Wyley's 16 on Nov. 20, 2010.
Kutztown entered the game as the PSAC's top scoring offense and it looked the part in the first half. The Golden Bears shot 48.3 percent from the field and took a 35-31 lead into the break. A gritty Millersville club stayed close, though, and earned the win with arguably its best defensive performance of the season in the second half.
Over the final 20 minutes, Millersville out-scored Kutztown 46-32 and held the Golden Bears to 26.3 percent shooting. Miller scored 13 of his points in second frame, and Obade totaled nine points and 12 boards in the second half alone.
Millersville led only once in the first half and trailed by as many as seven but opened the second half on a 9-1 run. Miller's layup at the 17:02 mark gave Millersville its first lead in more than 10 minutes. The teams traded the lead six times in the next four minutes, but
Anthony Coleman's two free throws at 13:25 put the Marauders in front for good. Obade followed with two more foul shots and the Marauders rolled to a 10-2 run.
The lead reached to double-figures when Coleman stepped in front of a Micah Fraction pass at mid-court and went coast-to-coast for an easy layup. Millersville boasted the lead to 66-52 with 6:09 left on a jumper from
Demond Vance.
That bucket and 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line in the final 2:02 helped the Marauders hold on to the win.
Millersville's 27 free throws were the most made since Dec. 3. Vance went 4-for-4 at the line and totaled 13 points.
Larry Grant shot 8-for-11 and totaled 14 points and four assists.
