THE STARTING FIVE
(1) Millersville's 60-48 win over Goldey-Beacom pushed the team's winning streak to six games. The Marauders now try for seven in a row, which hasn't been acomplished since the 2006-07 club won eight in a row. It is the eighth time since
Fred Thompson took over in 1998-99 that Millersville has won at least six games in a row. Full PSAC crossover play began last season, but Millersville has started unbeaten against its first three PSAC opponents only once since 1986-87 (2007-08). Millersville is 4-0 at home this season and 140-60 all-time under Thompson. Thompson is also 58-34 (.630) in home league games.
(2) The Marauders are winning with defense and rebounding. During the current streak, Millersville has held five of six teams under 60 points. Opponents are averaging 53.2 points per game while shooting 35.1 percent from the field. Allowing 61.6 points per game, Millersville ranks third in the PSAC in scoring defense and second in scoring margin at 12.3 points per game. Millersville has held opponents to 27.7 percent shoting from three. It's a drastic improvement from 2011-12 when the Marauders ranked 15th in scoring defense (77.6), 14th in field goal percentage defense (.466) and dead last in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.417).
(3) Millersville has dominated the boards, tying for the league lead with 16.6 offensive rebounds per game and ranking fourth in rebounding margin. The team is 6-1 when outrebounding its opponent. Two-time PSAC East Athlete of the Week
Elijah Obade leads not only the PSAC but all of Division II with 14.6 boards per game. Among all NCAA players, only Cole Dickerson of Division I San Francisco and A.J. Matthews of Division III Farmingdale State average more. Obade has averaged a remarkable 16.5 boards over his last four games. His five double-doubles is tied for the most in Division II.
(4) Because of a concussion suffered against Clarion,
Anthony Coleman was forced to sit against Goldey-Beacom, ending a streak of 57 consecutive games played for the junior. He had appeared in every game of his collegiate career.
Brandon Brown received his first career starting in place of Coleman and continued his emergence. He totaled 12 points and a career-high five assists. Brown hit for double-figures twice in his last three games and averaged 12.7 points, 4.0 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game while shooting 12-of-22 from the field and 6-of-11 from three. This comes after scoring a total of 23 points in his first 23 games as a Marauder and starting 3-of-20 from three.
(5) Millersville and Bloomsburg have established quite a rivalry in recent years. The teams have evenly split the last eight meetings and all but one of those games were decided by single digits. Since 2008 the average margin of victory is 4.5 points. Millersville holds an 92-84 all-time lead in the series, but 87 of those games (62.1 percent) have been decided by fewer than 10 points. The programs have played five overtime games since 2001 including in 2011.
ABOUT BLOOMSBURG
· In 2011-12, Bloomsburg posted a 19-9 overall record, shared the PSAC East title and reached the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 10 seasons. Reigning PSAC East Player of the Year and former PSAC Rookie of the Year Dontahe Jordan was one of only two starters to return, though, and Bloomsburg has limped to a 2-4 start and an 0-2 mark in league play. Jordan has been himself, averaging a double-double of 15.7 points and 10.8 rebounds. Lorenzo Christmas, who scored 25 points in an overtime win over the Marauders in 2010, is second in scoring at 13.5 points per game, and as the Marauders know, he's a dangerous 3-point shooter. He has hit 37.5 percent of his three this season. Charles Haigler (13.3) and Wes Lyons (12.0) are also averaging double figures. Millersville is all-too familiar with Jordan. In four career games against Millersville, he averaged 21.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
· Bloomsburg's biggest issue seems to be on the defensive end, where it surrenders 80.7 points per game and ranks last in the PSAC. Opponents are shooting 47.3 percent (16th) from the field and 39.1 percent from three (15th). The team's four losses have come by an average of 12.5 points, while its wins over Penn State Hazleton and Chestnut Hill were by a total of three points.
· Head coach Jon Sanow, a 1987 graduate of IUP, is in his seventh season at Bloomsburg. He was an All-PSAC First Team pick in 1986 while leading IUP in scoring. He also coached as an assistant at Vermont and St. Francis. At both stops, the teams reached the conference championship game, and St. Francis reached the NCAA Tournament in 1991.
