Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Millersville men's basketball trailed visiting Goldey-Beacom by six at halftime Wednesday night in Pucillo Gymnasium. Senior center
Elijah Obade would not let the Marauders be denied its sixth consecutive victory, however. He registered a double-double in the second half alone, and Millersville held the Lightning to just 16 second-half points for a 60-48 win.
Obade, the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week, finished with 28 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks. He totaled 19 points, 10 rebounds and all six of his blocks in the second as the Marauders (6-2) outscored the Lightning (3-6) 34-16. Millersville has now won six in a row for the first time since 2007. Five of the last six opponents have been held to fewer than 60 points.
Outside of a six minute stretch at the end of the first half in which Goldey-Beacom scored 20 points to erase an eight-point deficit and take a 32-26 halftime lead, Millersville held the Lightning to 28 points over nearly 34 minutes. Goldey-Beacom, however took an eight point lead on its second possession of the second period. Millersville desperately needed an offensive spark, and it received one from junior
Jaymes Miller.
Miller scored on back-to-back possessions, and Obade followed a steal with a score to cut the deficit to two. The two teams combined for just one point over almost four minutes. Obade traded baskets with the Lightning twice to make the score 42-40 in favor of the visitors. But after A.J. Picard's jumper, Millersville's
Xavier Mumford turned the game around for the Marauders. With 9:16 to go, he followed a
Kemar Williams miss with a emphatic tip-dunk that tied the game. Goldey-Beacom immediately committed a turnover against Millersville's full court pressure, and
Brandon Brown, who scored 12 points in his first career start, gave Millersville a 44-42 lead.
Marcus Porter answered for Goldey-Beacom, but Millersville shut down Goldey-Beacom, allowing only four points over the final 7:32. Obade scored 11 of of Millersville's 16 points in the final 6:19 including two dunks in the final minute.
Obade's six blocks marked a career-high, and the nation's leader in rebounding has averaged 16.5 rebounds over his last four games and totaled at least 18 in three of those games. Mumford pulled down a a career-high 13 rebounds. Mumford and Obade combined for 16 offensive rebounds, and Millersville totaled 13 second-chance points. In addition to his 12 points, Brown added a career-high five assists.
Larry Grant handed out seven assists.
Millersville, now 4-0 at home, returns to PSAC play against Bloomsburg Saturday. The game is a Blackout for Marauder fans, who are encouraged to wear black. The first 50 students receive a free t-shirt and the first 100 students receive a free Turkey Hill drink. The men's game is set for 3 p.m. The women's game precedes it, starting at 1 p.m.
