THE STARTING FIVE
(1) Millersville enters the final games of the 2012 calendar year riding a seven-game winning streak and a perfect 3-0 record in PSAC play. The Marauders are one of only three teams in the 16-team PSAC currently unbeaten in league play. The seven-game streak is the longest since the end of the 2006-07 season. The 7-2 start is Millersville's best record through nine games since starting 2006-07 with an 8-1 mark.
(2) Full PSAC crossover play began last season, but Millersville has started unbeaten against its first three PSAC opponents only twice since 1986-87 with 2007-08 being the other occurence. Millersville is 5-0 at home this season and 141-60 all-time under Thompson. Thompson is also 59-34 (.630) in home league games. Millersville is beating opponents by an average of 17.4 points per game in Pucillo Gymnasium and is holding teams to 32.9 percent shooting from the field, 23.3 percent shooting from three, and out-rebounding teams by 10.0 boards per game.
(3) A staunch defense is quickly becoming Millersville's hallmark. Since allowing 174 points in the first two games, Millersville has allowed just 52.6 points per game and opponents are shooting a mere 34.6 percent from the field. Six of the last seven opponents have been held to fewer than 58 points and four have been held to under 50 points. Millersville ranks second in the PSAC in scoring defense (28th nationally), allowing 60.2 points per game. The games against Gannon and Mercyhurst can be expected to be low scoring with Gannon (57.6) ranking first in the PSAC (11th nationally), and Mercyhurst (62.4) ranking fourth. Millersville has out-rebounded teams by 8.3 boards per game, but Gannon is even better on the glass, holding an 8.9 rebounding margin.
(4) Millersville does not have a successful history against Gannon and Mercyhurst. The Marauders are 3-9 against the Golden Knights and 1-3 against the Lakers. Gannon won seven of 10 meetings between 1986-1994 and is 2-0 since joining the PSAC. Millersville's last win over Gannon came in 1995. Gannon used overtime to beat Millersville 98-97 last season at Pucillo. The Marauders led by 11 at the half but Gannon scored with seven seconds left to tie the game. In overtime, Gannon led by 1 with 46 seconds left but
Larry Grant's jumper with three seconds left missed. Mercyhurst joined the PSAC in 2008-09 and has won all three meetings since. All three games have been decided by an average margin of 4.7 points.
Larry Grant averaged 26.0 points per game against the two teams in 2011-12.
(5) Elijah Obade ranks No. 1 in Division II in rebounds per game, leading St. Rose's Dominykas Mika by 1.8 per game. His four double-doubles is tied for fourth and his 3.1 blocks per game ranks fourth. He is the only player in the nation to rank in the top 10 in rebounding and blocks
ABOUT GANNON
· Forward Darrell Blanton is among the best players in the PSAC. He averaged 17.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and was All-PSAC West First Team in 2011-12. He leads the team in scoring and rebounding again this season, and is converting an incredible 70.1 percent of his shots. He has led the team in scoring five times. Since starting 5-0, Gannon has gone 2-2, falling to East Stroudsburg and IUP in close games. The Golden Knights bounced back by winning the Porreco Cup with double-digit wins over both Notre Dame College and Virginia State last weekend. The Golden Knights are a defensive-minded club, holding teams to a PSAC-best 57.6 points per game. No team has scored more than 72 points against Gannon this season.
ABOUT MERCYHURST
· Former All-PSAC West First Team selection Luis Leao leads a team that returns only two starters from last season's 18-10 team. Leao has led Mercyhurst in scoring in seven consecutive games and ranks third in the PSAC at 19.8 points per game. He's scored over 20 points in four games already, and he's the only player on the team averaging double figures. Mercyhurst is the No. 1 field goal percentage defense in the PSAC, holding teams to 37.9 percent shooting. At the other end of the floor, the Lakers have made the third-most 3-pointers and are third in the league in 3-point percentage. Leao is the reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Week. Andy Hoying won the PSAC West Freshman of the Week award last week as well.
