Box Score Lock Haven, Pa. - The road hadn't been kind to Millersville in 2012, and through 11 minutes of Saturday's PSAC crossover at Lock Haven, the Marauders trailed by 18 and appeared well on their way to an 0-3 road record. But powered by 31 points from
Larry Grant, 19 from
Brandon Brown and 19 points and 21 rebounds from
Elijah Obade, Millersville rallied for an 87-79 overtime victory.
Millersville (4-2, 1-0 PSAC) has now won four in a row for the first time since February of 2008 and improved to 55-16 all-time with 12 consecutive wins against Lock Haven. Millersville needed nearly every second of regulation to pull off the comeback, though.
Lock Haven (2-2) led by 14 with 18:23 left in the game and held the advantage for all but 1:32 of the game until the Marauders ripped off a 19-4 run and finally retook the lead at 50-49 on a
Xavier Mumford hoop with 10:28 to go.
The two teams stood in a tied score seven times and traded the lead eight times over the final 10 minutes. Millersville trailed 70-67 at the two-minute mark, but Brown, whose 19 was a career high, hit a triple to tie the game again. Lock Haven quickly grabbed the lead and extended it to 73-70 on Dave Garcia's first foul shot with 14 seconds left. But with a chance to put the game away, Garcia missed the second attempt, and Millersville raced ahead.
The ball found Grant, who not only sank a field goal but was fouled with seven seconds remaining. Grant completed the three-point play to tie the game at 73-73. Lock Haven's Wali Hepburn, who totaled a team-high 30 points in the game, received the Bald Eagles' last shot to end the game in regulation, but it was no good.
Millersville outscored Lock Haven 42-32 in the second half and carried that momentum into the extra session. Garcia made a quick 3-pointer to give Lock Haven the advantage on its first possession, but on Millersville's next offensive possession, it tallied three offensive rebounds before Brown scored on a tip. Millersville got a stop and took the lead for good when Grant hit a three.
Millersville held Lock Haven scoreless for all but four seconds of overtime, and Grant put the game away with eight points.
Brown incredibly matched his previous career high by 16 points. He hit 6-of-9 shots from the field, 2-of-3 from deep, recorded a career-high four steals and also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds. Grant scored 31 for the second time this season and sank 13-of-17 shots from the line. Obade's 21 boards marked a career high and come one game after he hauled in 19. Obade has at least 13 rebounds in five of six games this season.
Millersville now travels to Clarion for a 3 p.m. game on Sunday.
