West Chester Holds Off Marauders In Five-Set Thriller

Box Score West Chester, Pa. – The first meeting between Millersville and West Chester's women's volleyball teams went the distance earlier this season, with the Golden Rams stunning the Marauders on their home floor. Friday night, Millersville couldn't return the favor, falling again in five sets, 3-2, on West Chester's home floor.

In the first matchup, the Golden Rams rallied from a 2-0 hole to win. This time, it was the Marauders that were on the comeback trail after falling behind 2-1 through the first three sets. Millersville won the first set, 25-20, before falling in successive sets, 25-15 and 25-17, respectively.

The Marauders took the fourth set to keep the match alive with a 25-23 victory, but their comeback bid fell short when West Chester claimed the deciding set with a 15-12 to hold off the visitors. The Golden Rams truly did need to hold off the Millersville offense, which got better as the match wore on. The team hit .286 in the fourth set and a team match-best .308 in the fifth set despite the loss.

Katie Lesinski led the offense in the match, posting a team-high 12 kills on 36 attempts. The Millersville offense at the net had good balance, with six players posting five or more kills. The freshman trio of Samantha Agostini, Rhianna Kalescky and Taylor Smith totaled 28 kills for the match. Jessica Franz had 39 assists as the team's main facilitator on the offensive end.

Defensively, the team showed balance as well, with four players posting eight-plus digs, led by Brooklyn Smith's 20. She also led the team with three service aces. The Golden Rams were too strong up front, however, as Millersville had just five blocks as a team. West Chester's offense collectively hit .283, and Lexi Kegerise led the way with a match-high 19 kills.

The loss drops Millersville to 13-17 overall and 6-12 in the PSAC East. On the flip side, West Chester goes to 18-15 and 8-10 in the PSAC East. With both teams having clinched a PSAC Tournament berth before the match even started, this match was crucial for seeding purposes. The Marauders are now locked into the fourth seed and will travel to Lock Haven on Tuesday evening in first round play.

Millersville has just one more regular season match on its schedule. The team takes the floor Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cheyney against the winless Wolves, who currently sit at 0-25 and 0-18 in the PSAC East. The Wolves have won just one set in 35 meetings between the teams, as Millersville carries a 35-0 series record into tomorrow's regular season finale.
