THE STARTING FIVE
(1) Millersville started 0-2 for the first time since 2001 but returns home to the friendly confines of Pucillo Gymnasium where the program boasts an 136-60 record at Pucillo Gymnasium under Coach
Fred Thompson. Thompson's teams are also 81-21 in home non-conference games. Millersville has won six consecutive home openers, and five of those wins have been by double-digit margins. Thompson's teams have won 11 of 14 home openers. Millersville is also looking to avoid just the eighth 0-3 start in the history of the program, which started in 1899. Thompson's 2001-02 club started 0-3 but rallied to finish 17-10 and win the PSAC East with a 10-2 mark.
(2) Larry Grant produced an outstanding offensive first weekend, scoring a career-high 31 points against Ohio Valley and then tallying 26 against Glenville State. Grant scored more points in the first two games of the season than any other Marauder since game-by-game files became available in 1982. Since the start of last season, he has six games of 20 points or more and has led the team in both points and assists in the same game eight times. In the first two games of this season, he shot 54.1 percent shooting from the field and 41.2 percent shooting from three--a marked improvement over last season when he shot 41.1 percent from the field at 22.0 percent from three. He's the PSAC's leading scorer after week one. Gerald Redding in 2001-02 was the last Marauder to lead the league in scoring.
(3) Elijah Obade totaled 26 rebounds in the first games of the season, taking an early lead in his quest to repeat as the PSAC's rebounding champion. Since 1999-2000, only Kenny Tate ('99-'01) and Jakim Donaldson ('03-'05) of Edinboro have led the league in back-to-back seasons. For Millersville, only Obade and Touchi Udeinya ('01-'02) finished in the top five at any point in that time period. Obade has pulled down 10 or more rebounds in 11 of his last 13 games. What's most impressive is that nearly half of his rebounds (12 of 26) have come on the offensive glass. Since the start of the 2011-12 season, Obade has averaged nearly 4.3 offensive rebounds per game.
(4) Both Wilmington and USciences earned rare victories over the Marauders a season ago. Wilmington's came on the strength of Herbert Dennis (16) and Brandon Fox (12). USciences shredded Millersville's defense for 87 points on 60.9 percent shooting. Four of the five players that scored in double figures last season are on this season's team.
(5) From 1999-2000 through 2007-08, Millersville never ranked lower than eighth in the PSAC in scoring defense. Over the last four seasons (all below .500), the team has ranked 12th, 9th, 10th and 15th. Since the start of last season, opponents are shooting 46.8 percent against Millersville.
THE WILDCATS
· Mike Gallagher is in his fourth season at Wilmington with a 28-55 record. His club improved to a 10-16 record a year ago but mut replace the bulk of its scoring as All-CACC First Team pick and 18.1 point per game scorer Corye Payton and 10.9 point per game scorer Matt King graduated. It's been a slow start for the Wildcats, losing its first three games--all by double figures. They played their home opener Wednesday against Kutztown and fell 92-68 after shooting a mere 26.5 percent from the field in the first half. After scoring 23 in the first half, the Wildcats charged back with 45 points in the second half, but it allowed Kutztown to shoot 53 percent in the game. Defense has been an issue for the Wildcats. They are allowing 80 points per game and opponents are shooting 48.9 percent. James Pee (13.0) and Herbert Dennis (13.0) are the leading scorers but a different player has led the team in scoring in all three games.
THE DEVILS
· USciences is coming off of a 6-19 season but returns six of its top seven scorers from a season ago including Garrett Kerr, who was named to the Division II Bulletin All-Freshman Team after averaging 15.9 points and 13.9 boards. He led the CACC is rebounding. In last season's meeting, USciences shot 60.9 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from three to earn its first-ever win over Millersville. Returnees Tyone Mann-Barnes (19) and William Kernan (19) led the way. USciences started a run of five games in a week Monday with a 68-61 to CACC rival Philadelphia. The Devils play at Lincoln Thursday, home against East Stroudsburg Saturday, at Millersville Sunday and at Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday. Through two games, Garret Kerr has paced the team with 19.5 points and 13.0 rebounds per game. Henry Messinger (13.0) and Patrck Connaghan (10.5) are also averaging double figures, but the team is averaging just 62.0 points per game. Despite the low point-per-game total, the Devils shoot an efficient 48.0 percent from the field. The issue offensively has been turnovers, averaging 17.0 per game.
