Marauders Pitch Homecoming Shutout Versus Cheyney

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Millersville's Dominic Sanders and Mike Jones combined for four touchdowns and an opportunistic defense generated five turnovers in a 35-0 win over Cheyney on Homecoming Saturday.

Millersville's (2-5, 1-3 PSAC East) defense recorded its first shutout since October of 2007, and with four recovered fumbles, a blocked punt and a Quinn West interception, it continually put the Marauder offense in prime field position. The offense had six drives that started in Cheyney (1-6, 0-4 PSAC East) territory.

Quarterback Ted Stachitas returned from injury to throw for three touchdowns on 9-of-13 passing. He totaled 137 yards through the air and 42 more on the ground. Freshman Connor Casey, who made the spectacular debut a week ago against Bloomsburg, entered in relief and completed 3-of-6 passes with a touchdown.

The Marauder offense had to overcome a slow start, though. The defense forced Cheyney into a three-and-out on the first series and Pat Cantrell blocked a punt that was scooped up by Zack Riley at the Cheyney 14. On Millersville's first play, though, Shannon Burch picked off Stachitas' pass over the middle, thwarting a scoring opportunity.

Millersville came up empty in the first quarter, but three plays into the second, Stachitas found Sanders from seven yards out to cap an eight-play, 65-yard drive. It was Sanders' first TD grab of the season, but it wouldn't be his only one of the game.

Lou Brown set up Millersville's next score with a 23-yard punt return to the Cheyney 20. With 4:23 left in the second, Casey entered and completed a pair of passes, and Sanders forced a pass interference penalty that set the ball on the Cheyney 1-yard line. Jones plunged in for his third rushing score of the season.

Stachitas ignited the Marauder offense to a quick scoring drive to start the third. A 34-yard strike to Brent Collins and a 22-yard rush pushed the ball to the Cheyney 8-yard line. On first-and-goal, he tossed a back-shoulder throw inside the front left pylon to Sanders for his second TD catch of the game.

Jones, who caught Millersville's longest pass of the season a week ago, nearly matched it with 11:17 left in the fourth quarter when he hauled in a 45-yard pass from Stachitas. Jones caught it over-the-shoulder tiptoeing down the home sideline and out-ran the defender for his second TD of the game, fourth receiving touchdown of the season, and seventh score overall.

Millersville's final score came with 1:40 to go when Casey lofted a 17-yard toss to Mike Reichebach. It was Reichenbach's first career touchdown.

Pat Maloney and Jordan Rigby led the defensive charged with 12 and 10 tackles respectively. Rigby also forced a fumble. Jamie Thomas forced a fumble and recovered two. One of those fumbles he caught out of the air and raced 37 yards into Cheyney territory. Brian Knell and Pat Cantrell also recovered fumbles. Kyle Wolfe generated his first career quarterback sack.

Cheyney held a 36:19-18:52 time of possession advantage and ran the ball on 48 of 68 snaps. Millersville rushed for 121 yards, marking the third time this season it has eclipsed the 100-yard mark.

The Marauders head on the road to LIU Post next Saturday. Kickoff is 1 p.m. The game can be heard live on MSBN.
