THE STARTING FIVE
(1) Millersville enters Wednesday's clash with Bloomsburg two games out of the final PSAC East playoff spot. The Marauders are coming off an 82-70 loss at Mansfield and face a stiff challenge in Bloomsburg, which is tied for first place in the PSAC East. Bloomsburg is also trying to recover from a loss, though. After starting PSAC play 9-2, the Huskies have lost two of three including a 74-65 decision Saturday against Kutztown.
(2) Last season, Millersville and Bloomsburg played two epic games. The Huskies won a 91-87 overtime thriller at home behind 25 points from Lorenzo Christmas. Bloomsburg trailed 38-31 at the half but out-scored Millersville 49-42 in the secod half thanks to 65.4 percent shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from three in the second period.
Mike Seibert made a 3-pointer with six seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Millersville exacted revenge at home in a 108-103 triple overtime win.
Demond Vance led Millersville with 33 points and Seibert scored 24. The team tied a school record for free throws made with 39.
(3) Millersville received two double-doubles from
Elijah Obade during the week. In the win over Shippensburg, Obade scored 21 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked four shots. He followed that performance with 11 points and 13 rebounds at Mansfield. Obade has now registered three consecutive double-doubles and five on the season. He has grabbed 10 or more rebounds in 10 games. His 21 points against Shippensburg marked the second 20-point tame of his career. His four blocks tied a career-high. He has blocked at least one shot in 16 of 17 games and has two or more in 12 games. The last Marauder to average more than 9.0 boards per game for a season was Brian Jones (9.3) in 2004-05.
(4) Anthony Coleman has been on a roll lately, scoring in double figures in six consecutive games. He averaged a team-best 17.8 points and also 5.2 rebounds during that stretch and was also a marksman from the field, hitting 58.8 percent of his shots and 20-of-24 free throws. Coleman scored in double figures just twice as a freshman in 2010-11. His averages have jumped 7.6 points, 1.7 rebounds and 13.3 minutes per game.
(5) Larry Grant has been Millersville's top all-around offensive player this season, leading the team in points and assists per game. Millersville, however, has lost three of four, and Grant's production has dipped in all three of those games. Since totaling 21 assists to two turnovers against West Chester and Cheyney, he has committed 19 turnovers (20 assists) in the last four games and 16 of those came in the three losses. He had scored 15 or more 10 times in 14 games but in the last three losses, he's averaged just 7.7 points per game.
THE HUSKIES
· Bloomsburg coach John Sanow has gradually built his program into a PSAC contender. Since going 4-23 in 2008-09, his team has gone 13-15 in the PSAC East and were picked third in this season's preseason poll. Last season's PSAC East Freshman of the Year Dontahe Jordan is experiencing no sophomore slump. He leads the team with 15.5 points per game and has led the team in scoring 10 times. Center Larry Webster ranks eighth in the PSAC in rebounding and third in blocks. Trevon Johnson is the PSAC leader in assists.
· Bloomsburg impressed early by winning eight in a row after a season-opening loss to Wheeling Jesuit. Those wins included a 66-64 triumph over PSAC West frontrunner Indiana (Pa.). The Huskies have now dropped two of the last three, suffering a road loss to West Chester and a home loss to Kutztown. In all five of the Huskies' losses, they have been held to under .435 shooting from the field. They are 3-4 when shooting below that mark.
· After missing the first three games of the season, Jordan produced an impressive stretch where he scored double figures in 12 of 14 games and scored over 20 four times. In the last two games, though, his has scored eight and nine points. He shot a combined 7-for-23 from the field and 0-for-6 from three in those games. Dating to the start of his freshman year, Jordan has never been held single digits in three consecutive games.
· Bloomsburg thrives on defense. It ranks fourth in the PSAC in blocked shots (3.9), fourth in scoring defense (67.9) and fifth in field goal percentage defense (.428).
