Mansfield Keeps Marauders at Bay

Box Score Mansfield, Pa. - Mansfield had an answer for everything Saturday. Each Millersville run was halted in its tracks by the home Mounties, and eventually they were able to pull away by an 82-70 score.

Millersville (6-12, 4-10 PSAC) trailed for all but five minutes of the game, and fell behind by as many as 12 with five minutes left in the first half. Despite retying the game before the half came to a close and despite pulling within two score several times in the second half, it could not overtake Mansfield (7-11, 4-10 PSAC).

Mansfield, which has won all seven of its games at home, shot a blistering 52.6 percent from the field and hit 7-of-13 3-pointers. Millersville, meanwhile, shot 38.5 percent and managed just 5-of-22 on threes. Still, the Marauders were never completely out of reach until the final minute.

Using a 21-5 run that started with just over 10 minutes left in the first half, Mansfield erased a 9-7 deficit and grew it into a 28-15 advantage. Millersville quickly battled back using points from five different players to tie the game at 30-30 on a Larry Grant layup with seven seconds left in the half.

Mansfield's Josh Dupuy hit a back-breaking 3-pointer at the buzzer, though, giving the Mounties a 33-30 advantage at the half. Millersville seemingly never recovered.

The Marauders kept Mansfield within reach and trailed 68-62 with 3:08 to go. But a Kevonte McClain three-point play started a 7-0 run in the next 31 seconds that blew the game wide open. Mansfield put the win away at the line by hitting eight in the final three minutes.

Joe Bell led Mansfield with 20 points. The Mounties also received four threes off the bench from Cory Henneghan. Four Marauders scored in double figures. Grant and Mike Seibert each totaled 14. Anthony Coleman added 11, and Elijah Obade tallied his third consecutive double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Millersville returns to Pucillo Gymnasium Wednesday to host PSAC East-leading Bloomsburg.
