THE STARTING FIVE
(1) Millersville earned its third win in the last five games Wednesday against Shippensburg and remains just two games out of the fourth PSAC Tournament spot from the PSAC East with plenty of time--nine games--to make up ground. A difficult challenge presents itself Saturday in a road game at Mansfield. The Marauders haven't won in Decker Gymnasium since 2007-08--a span of three games. Mansfield has given the Marauders fits since that win, taking six in a row. Five of the six games were decided by eight points or fewer. Only two of the last 10 meetings have been decided by more than 10 points.
(2) Against Shippensburg,
Elijah Obade registered his second consecutive double-double and fourth of the season. His 21 points came within one of a career high and marked his second 20-point game of the season. His 12 rebounds were also one shy of a career high and marked the eighth time in the last 11 games that he totaled more than 10 boards. He enters the weekend ranked fourth in the PSAC in rebounding and with 66 offensive rebounds, he's second only to Bloomsburg's Larry Webster (68). The last Marauder to average more than 9.0 boards per game for a season was Brian Jones (9.3) in 2004-05. He already had more double-doubles than any player since
Bernard Brown had seven in 2007-08. Rayquan Miles also totaled five that season.
(3) Millersville will be looking for an offensive spark Saturday. On the road, the Marauders average 67.9 points per game, shoot 43.9 percent from the field, 24.8 percent from three and 61.0 percent from the line. At home, those averages just to 79.3 points per game, 47.9 percent from the field, 35 percent from three and 69.8 perecent from the line.
Anthony Coleman averages nearly six points per game more on the road than at home, and his shooting percentage is drastically different--47.1 on the road and 64.9 at home.
(4) Mike Seibert is one steal away from the 100th of his career. He needs 37 more to tie Jamal Palmer for 10th place on the career list. He also recently moved into 10th place all-time for career 3-pointers with 138. He is five away from Jim McClintock (1990-94) for ninth place. He is Millersville's most veteran player with 88 games played and 49 games started. He's played Mansfield five times and averaged 8.6 points per game. Last year, he was limited to a total of 11 points on 3-of-11 shooting. His best performance was on Jan. 30, 2010 at Mansfield when he scored 14 on 5-of-11 shooting.
(5) Millersville has totaled seven or more blocked shots six times and totaled eight twice. With eight blocks against Shippensburg, Millersville pushed its PSAC-leading total to 83 (4.9 per game).
THE MOUNTAINEERS
· Mansfield is coming off two seasons of at least 18 wins and four seasons of at least 15 wins. Last year, the Mountaineers went 18-9 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997. Now at 6-11 overall and 3-10 in the PSAC, the Mountaineers are in danger of missing the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 2007-08. Coach Rich Miller, now in his seventh season, has led Mansfield to the postseason in four of his six seasons.
· Mansfield is a different team at home than on the road, though. The Mountaineers are 0-8 away from Decker Gymnasium and 6-3 at home. The six victories include wins over Shippensburg, Mercyhurst, Roberts Wesleyan, Central Penn, Lock Haven and Penn College. The three PSAC wins have come by a total of 12 points.
· Mansfield has dropped three in a row, two of which were on the road and two came against Bloomsburg and Kutztown--the top two teams in the PSAC East standings. Scoring has not been an issue this year. The Mountaineers average 74.1 points per game, which is sixth in the PSAC. The team's field goal percentage (43.1) ranks 12th, however, and the free throw percentage (68.1) is 11th. Mansfield has attempted the sixth-most 3-pointers in the PSAC (318) but is shooting 32.1 percent, which ranks just 13th. The team ranks 12th in scoring defense, allowing 76.1 points per game.
· True freshman Joe Bell is certainly a contender for PSAC East Freshman of the Year. He's won the freshan of the week award four times--mostly recently on Jan. 16. He's second on the team in scoring at 13.8 points per game, and he's also the team's leading rebounder (6.6). Josh Dupuy and Kyle Bradley are both ultra-efficient guards. Dupuy has 87 assists to 39 turnovers and Bradley has 63 assists to just 26 turnovers. Both rank in the PSAC's top 10 in assists and the duo ranks one-two in assist/turnover ratio.
