THE STARTING FIVE
(1) Despite dropping two in a row to East Stroudsburg and Kutztown, Millersville is still in the mix for the PSAC Tournament as it trails West Chester by just two games in the standings with 10 games to play. Wednesday's game against Shippensburg, however, is key for both teams. The clubs enter the game tied in the standings with 3-9 league records, and something has to give. Shippensburg has struggled on the road (1-5) but Millersville has no fared much better at home (2-5). It is rare for Millersville to not win in Pucillo Gymnasium. In
Fred Thompson's 14 seasons, the Marauders are 132-59 (.686) at home.
(2) Shippensburg has had Millersville's number in recent years with Red Raider coach Dave Springer holding an 11-5 record against the Marauders. Since Shippensburg joined the PSAC East in 2008-09, it is 4-2 against Millersville. Home court advantage matters little. Last season Shippensburg won 75-69 in Pucillo, but the Marauders won 72-63 at Heiges Field House. Shippensburg has won two of the last three games at Pucillo.
(3) A recent bright spot for the Marauders has been the emergence of
Anthony Coleman as a dominant offensive force. He averaged 20. 5 points and nearly three assists per game over his last four. He also shot 61.2 percent from the field and grabbed 5.0 rebounds per game. Coleman posted an assist to turnover ratio 11:3 during the stretch as well. He is now one of four Marauders averaging double figures. Coleman is one of four Marauders to score at least 20 points this season.
Larry Grant hit the mark three times, Coleman has performed the feat twice, and
Elijah Obade and
Jaymes Miller have each accomplished it once. Entering the season Coleman's career high was 13 points. He has eclipsed that mark three times this season.
(4) Millersville currently ranks 14th in the PSAC in scoring defense, allowing 78.6 points per game. It's the most points per game allowed during
Fred Thompson's entire 14 year tenure. The last time Millersville allowed more than 75 points per game for an entire season was in 1992-93 when the Marauders allowed 76.6. That team, however, averaged more than 90 points per game and went 24-6 overall and 11-1 in the PSAC East. Oddly, the Marauders lead the PSAC in blocked shots with 4.7 per game.
Elijah Obade is No. 1 in the individual rankings with 2.4 per game.
(5) Mike Seibert is one steal away from the 100th of his career. He needs 37 more to tie Jamal Palmer for 10th place on the career list. He also recently moved into 10th place all-time for career 3-pointers with 138. He is five away from Jim McClintock (1990-94) for ninth place. His 82.4 free throw percent is also just ahead of Lance Gelnett for first all-time.
THE WARRIORS
· Shippensburg is a difficult match-up for the Marauders on paper. Millersville ranks 16th in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot 39 percent. Shippensburg ranks sixth in 3-point field goal percentage at 36.2 percent. Shippensburg is 16th in turnover margin, though (-3.22). Millersville, however, ranks 14th in steals and has generated the third-lowest amount of turnovers in the league.
· The Red Raiders are under the direction of 11th-year head coach Dave Springer. Springer, a 1984 graduate of Ohio University, owns a 132-163 record as the coach at Shippensburg. He has ties to Millersville as he served as the interim head coach for the program in 1996-97. He went 11-15 in that year.
· The Red Raiders have lost five in a row and seven of their last nine. Six of those seven losses, however, have come by 10 or fewer points. During their recent five-game skid, the average margin of defeat has been 4.6 points per game. The road has also been unkind to the Red Raiders, posting a 1-5 record.
· Shippensburg boasts a balanced offense with five players scoring in double figures and six players scoring more than 8.6 points per game. No player averages more than 12.4 points (Jordan Stasyszyn). The team shoots an impressive 49.8 percent from the field. That mark is tops in the PSAC. The team also ranks sixth in 3-point shooting at 36.2 percent. Craig Van Scyoc is among the best in the PSAC from beyond the arc. His 35-of-83 (42.2 percent) ranks seventh.
