Box Score Cheyney, Pa. - The clutch shooting of
Larry Grant and
Demond Vance erased a five-point deficit in the final minute of Monday's PSAC East clash with Cheyney and lifted the Marauders to a 78-76 come-from-behind victory.
The Marauders (5-9, 3-9) trailed homestanding Cheyney 75-70 with just under a minute remaining.
C.J. Scott started the comeback with a driving two. Cheyney attempted a long pass on the in-bound attempt and it was stolen away by the Marauders. Millersville quickly pushed the ball ahead and found Vance in the right corner. Despite missing his first five shot attempts of the game, Vance buried a fastbreak triple to tie the contest at 75-75 with just 26 seconds to go.
Cheyney called timeout with 11 seconds remaining to set up a final play, and before the ball was even entered in-bounds, Grant and Jason Saab tangled feet and Grant was whistled for a foul, sending Saab to the line for two shots. Saab, who had hit 10-of-10 free throws to start the game, missed the first. He managed to make the second, though, giving Cheyney a 76-75 lead with 11 seconds left.
With no timeouts, the Marauders passed in to Grant, and he wasted no time racing ahead and knifing into the lane where he scooped a layup from the right side. The ball went through the net with four seconds remaining, and he was also fouled in the act, giving him an opportunity for a three point play. Grant hit the free throw to extend Millersville's lead to two. Cheyney's in-bounds pass was tip away by
Jim Kelleher, who managed to keep it out of Cheyney hands until the clock expired.
The win gave Millersville back-to-back wins for the first time since starting the season 2-0. It also marked the first time Millersville has opened PSAC East play 2-0 since 2007-08.
In addition to his game-winning bucket, Grant finished with his second consecutive double-double of 19 points and 10 assists. He hit 9-of-10 from the line and also grabbed five rebounds. He has 21 assists in his last two games and is the first player in
Fred Thompson's 14 seasons to tally double-digit assists in back-to-back games.
Jaymes Miller followed Saturday's 7-for-7 shooting effort by dropping a team-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting.
Rob Wyley and
Anthony Coleman both added 10 points.
Millersville started the game sluggishly and trailed 36-31 at the half and fell behind by as many as 11 in the second period. The Marauders shot 58.6 percent from the field and 9-of-10 from the line in the second half.
