Track, Cross Country Teams Participate in Adopt a Family

Millersville, Pa. - The 2011 calendar year saw the Millersville men's and women's Track & Field and Cross Country programs participate in their 5th Annual Adopt a Family project. The goal of the program is to raise financial donations and adopt families through the Lancaster YMCA, who are struggling around Christmas time. The team purchased, wrapped, and delivered gifts along with grocery store gift cards to those families who are in need.

The team raised $2215.15 for the Adopt a Family project in 2011. They were able to adopt three families in the Lancaster area. Senior Whitney Savoy, a long- and triple-jumper on the track and field team, helped lead the fundraising efforts. Savoy stated that she “loves Christmas and likes giving gifts.”  She was “surprised by how much we could do for those families.”  She also stated that she enjoyed collecting donations because it gave her sense that she was accomplishing something worthwhile.

Jumps Coach Katrina Brumfield, who coordinated the program, thought that it was important for the team to learn that life is bigger than just college and track and field. The project is a way for them to give back to the community and to have a better understanding of people that might not be as fortunate as them. She thought it could push them out of their comfort zones for a very worthwhile cause.
