Wilmington, Del. – In 2009, Wilmington (Del.) was the only blemish on Millersville's 16-1 regular season record, ending the Marauders' season opening win streak at five, one shy of the team's best start in school history. On Sunday, the Wildcats repeated that feat by knocking off the No. 20 Marauders by a score of 4-2.
Millersville (5-1) took an opening lead in the fourth minute off a corner. Senior
Eric Pepper bent the ball into the box. The Wildcats failed on a clear attempt and
Ethan Daubert made them pay. Daubert collected the ball and found the back of the goal to give the Marauders a 1-0 lead.
In the 11th minute, senior
Aaron Roland increased Millersville's lead to two. Junior
Matt Kadoch headed a pass over to Roland just outside the box. Roland drilled it to the corner of the goal to beat the Wildcats' goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead.
Wilmington (3-3-2) earned a penalty kick in the 30th minute of play. The Marauders' goalkeeper
Brad Benzing received a yellow card to reward Kresimir Nurnberger with the penalty kick. Benzing saved the initial kick, but gave up a rebound that Nurnberger sent home to cut the Millersville lead to 2-1.
The Wildcats scored in the final minutes of the first half to send the game into the break tied, 2-2.
The game remained tied until the 56th minute. Wilmington's Eddie Kowalo collected a through pass from Ray Kuemmer to find himself alone with Benzing. Kowalo rippled the twine to give the Wildcats their first lead of the game, 3-2.
In the 64th minute, Wilmington scored a fourth unanswered goal to go up 4-2. The Marauders were unable to find an answer, falling for the first time this season.
Millersville returns home on Wednesday, Sept. 28 when it hosts Philadelphia. The match is slated for 7 p.m.
