GAME OF THE YEAR: Marauders Gut Out Triple Overtime Win Over Bloomsburg

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. - Just under one month ago, Bloomsburg edged Millersville in an epic overtime game. For an encore, the two PSAC East rivals combined for 211 points in a heart-stopping, triple overtime contest that ended in Millersville's favor, 108-103.

Millersville (9-10, 4-4 PSAC East) desperately needed the win to stay relevant in the PSAC playoff picture, and Bloomsburg (8-12, 4-4 PSAC East), which entered the game with three wins in its last four games, was trying to strengthen its grip on a postseason spot. Instead, after Saturday's barn-burner the teams are fittingly deadlocked in the standings.

Demond Vance led Millersville with a career-high 33 points, hitting 13-of-15 free throws, and Mike Seibert scored 24 points, hitting 9-of-10 from the line in 51 minutes of action. By making 39-of-50 free throws, the Marauders tied the school record previously set in 1987 for most made in a game. Every single point was needed to outlast the fiesty Huskies.

With six minutes left in regulation, the game appeared to be well in hand for the Marauders. After an offensive rebound, Seibert was fouled and sent to the line. Immediately, Bloom coach John Sanow was hit with two technical fouls and ejected from the game. Seibert went to the line and sank 5-of-6 foul shots to put Millersville in front 65-49.

Bloom, which overcame a 17-point deficit in the first game against Millersville and beat East Stroudsburg Wednesday after trailing by 22 points in the second half, slowly chipped away at Millersville's lead. Lorezo Christmas hit three 3-pointers in a two-minute span and Dontahe Jordan hit one more with 39 seconds left to bring Bloom within 73-71. After the teams traded free throws, Vance made one of two to give Millersville a 75-73 advantage with 15 ticks left. On Bloomsburg's final posession of regulation, Larry Webster picked up a lose ball and attacked the hoop. He sank his attempt with less than a second remaining to send the game to overtime.

In the first OT, Millersville led by as many as five with 2:27 to go. But it was Jesse Betar's turn for heroics. With seven seconds to go, Webster converted a three-point play to tie the game at 83-83. Seibert quickly heaved the inbounds pass to a streaking Vance who made an acrobatic layup with six seconds left. Webster, chasing the play, took the ball out for Bloom and tossed it the length of the floor. After a scramble, Betar picked up the ball, sank a leaning jumper and drew a foul with 0.9 seconds to go, giving his team a chance for the win.

Betar, an 81 percent free throw shooter on the season, was unable to hit the foul shot, though, and the game headed for a second extra session tied at 85.

With the score tied at 94 and time ticking away in the second overtime, Vance's go-ahead attempt was blocked, but Rob Wyley, who finished the game with 10 rebounds including seven on the offensive glass, battled for the rebound and found Seibert, who was fouled. Seibert hit both with 22 seconds to go, but at the other end, Bloomsburg pulled off another miracle.

Jordan attacked the hoop and scored the game-tying bucket with just over one second to go, sending the game into a third and deciding overtime.

Millersville and Bloomsburg traded baskets twice before Jaymes Miller scored and was fouled, giving Millersville a 102-100 lead. His free throw missed, but Miller grabed his own rebound and kicked it outside to Seibert, who splashed a 3-pointer from the left wing to put the Marauders in front, 105-100.

Finally with some breathing room, the Marauders were able to put the game away at the free thow line. Mike Holley sank 1-of-2 with eight seconds left, missing his second. The rebound went off of Webster's fingers out of bounds, and Vance was able to hit two more foul shots to seal the win.

It was Millersville's first triple overtime game since 2007, and the 108 points were the most scored by the Marauders since 1992. The 211 combined points marked the highest scoring game since Millersville and Central Oklahoma combined for 215 in 1992.

Millersville shot 31-of-68 (45.6), and Bloomsburg shot 36-of-85 (42.4). Miller scored 14 on 7-of-9 shooting, Bernard Brown added 10 points, six boards and three blocks, and Holley totaled nine points and seven assists. In addition to his 33 points, Vance totaled seven rebounds and four assists. Wyley, who played the majority of his 35 minutes in the three overtime periods, battled for eight points and 10 rebounds and made several incredible hustle plays before fouling out of the game.

Bloomsburg was led by Jordan's 28 points and 13 rebounds. Three of Bloomsburg's starters fouled out of the game including Christmas, who hit 4-of-7 from deep for 14 points.

Millersville has now won four of its last six and travels to Cheyney for another rivalry game Wednesday evening. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. Fans can listen to the action on MSBN.
