THE STARTING FIVE
(1) Despite being just six games into the season, Millersville enters an important weekend of basketball. The Marauders host Gannon and Clarion in PSAC games and the last two home games before a five-game road swing that includes trips to PSAC powers Edinboro, California, Indiana and PSAC East rival Cheyney. Millersville needs to hit the brakes on its current four-game skid as it is 2-4 overall and 0-2 in league play heading into a difficult stretch of the schedule. Millersville suffered its most lopsided loss of the season on Wednesday at USciences, 87-71. The Devils shot 60.9 percent from the field at 41.7 percent from three. It was the Devils' first ever win over Millersville in seven tries.
(2) Millersville's lack of defense has caused it issues. It ranks 13th in the PSAC in scoring defense, 12th in field goal percentage defense (.451) and 15th in 3-point field goal defense (.416). In the four losses, opponents are shooting .500 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from 3-point range with 33 makes in 70 attempts. At the other end of the floor, Millersville is shooting a solid 45.1 percent from the field but just 28.1 percent from three.
Mike Seibert (11-of-28) is the only player on the team with more than five attempts that is shooting better than 35 percent from long range.
(3) Junior
Larry Grant is emerging Millersville's top offensive playmaker. Not only does he lead the team in points per game (14.8), he is also the leader in assists with 3.3 per game. His six assists against USciences was a career high. His shooting percentages are skewed because of an 0-of-12 game against Slippery Rock. In the other five games, he's averaging 17.8 points, 3.8 assists and shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from the line (20-for-24). He's scored at least 17 points in four of six games and double figures in five of six. After starting the season 1-of-20 from three, he's 5-of-13 and 38.5 percent in his last two games.
(4) Last season, Millersville played at Gannon and Clarion on Jan. 3-4. Both games ended in losses with Gannon winning 74-52 behind 20 points from Stephen Battle. Millersville shot 35.8 percent in the game and committed 25 turnovers. The next day against Clarion,
Elijah Obade played his best game of the season, totaling 17 points and nine rebounds in an 85-76 loss. Lloyd Harrison scored 29 and Jamar Harrison scored 20 for Clarion.
(5) The Golden Knights hold an 8-3 edge all-time, but last season's meeting was the first since 1994. In 1986 and 1987, Gannon ended Millersville's season in the NCAA Tournament. Millersville is 8-7 against Clarion with
Fred Thompson holding a 6-4 mark. Clarion hasn't played in Pucillo since 2007 and has never won in four games in the building.
THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
· Gannon's two losses have been by a total of three points (Daeman, 67-65 and East Stroudsburg (90-89). The Golden Knights are one of the top offensive teams in the league, ranking sixth in scoring offense at 80.0 points per game. They are sixth in free throw percentage (73.4), fourth in field goal percentage (49.6) and No. 1 in 3-point field goal percentage at 49.0 percent. Gannon, however, has taken 30 fewer threes than the No. 2-ranked team and has taken fewer threes than all but one team--Lock Haven. Gannon is also a solid rebounding team, outrebounding teams by an average of 7.2 per game. Darrell Blanton is eighth in the league in scoring (17.8) and Adam Blazek ranks 13th (16.5). Blazek was named PSAC West Freshman of the Week earlier. Blanton is also ranked fourth in rebounding (8.5), making him one of only two players in the league to rank in the top 10 in both categories.
THE GOLDEN EAGLES
· Entering Saturday's game against West Chester, Clarion boasted two of the PSAC's best rebounders in Quintus “Bud” Teer and Paul McQueen. Teer is the league leader with 11.8 per game and McQueen averages 7.2 per game (tied for ninth). As a team, Clarion ranks fourth in the PSAC in rebounding margin and third in rebounds per game. McQueen is also a scorer, averaging 16.3 points per game. Willis Winfield's 16.7 per game is tops on the team. Clarion struggles from 3-point range, shooting 31.4 percent. The inaccuracy has not deterred the team from shooting, though. Clarion is fifth in total 3-point attempts with 102. Head coach Ron Righter picked up the 400th win of his career against ESU on Nov. 20. With a 377-251 record at the school, he's the all-time wins leader. He coached at Wilkes prior to Clarion and is 401-275 in 26 seasons.
