Elijah Obade scored a career-high 22 points, and Millersville roared back from a nine-point halftime deficit only to come up short in its final possessions Wednesday night at Wilmington. The Wildcats used four free throws in the final 31 seconds from Herbert Dennis to hand Millersville its third straight loss, 80-77.
The Marauders (2-3) trailed 42-33 after the Wildcats drilled 5-of-10 threes in the period. A 3-pointer from Dennis with 12:52 remaining in the game put Wilmington ahead 61-51. Obade scored on Millersville's next trip down the floor, starting a 10-0 that included four points from
Mike Seibert.
Millersville pulled even on a Seibert jumper with 10:02 to go and neither team held a lead of more than four the rest of the way. Millersville finally took its first lead at 73-72 with 4:03 to go on an Obade free throw, and the clubs exchanged a one-point advantage four times in the next two minutes.
Anthony Coleman hit for two with 1:57 left, puttin ghte Marauders in front 77-76, but just like the previous three games, the Marauders went cold down the stretch. Millersville committed a turnover and missed its final two shots from the field in the final minute.With 31 seconds left, Herbert knocked down both free throws to give Wilmington the lead. Millersville missed, and Herbert was immediately fouled. He drilled both again, making it a three-point game with four seconds left.
Larry Grant's desperation three missed the mark.
Millersville hit 18-of-30 in the second half and shot 55.6 percent from the field in the game. Wilmington made 18-of-27 in the first but cooled considerably in the second, hitting 35.3 percent. The Wildcats, however, made 11-of-25 3-pointers while Millersville made just 4-of-14.
Dennis finished with 16 and hit all six of his free throws. For Millersville, Obade played a career-high 31 minutes and hit 9-of-10 shots from the field to go with nine rebounds and three blocks. Grant bounced back from his 0-for-11 against Slippery Rock with 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Seibert added 16 and Coleman totaled 12 for his fourth double-figure effort in five games.
All three of Millersville's losses have been by nine points of fewer. Millersville tries to end its skid on Nov. 30 at University of the Sciences.
