Millersville Fades After Strong Start; Falls to Gannon, 74-52

Box Score

Gannon, Pa. - After 22 minutes of play, the Millersville men's basketball team was on its way to its first road win of the season. But Gannon, sparked by Kelvin Agees' 12 second-half points, outscored the Marauders by 24 in the period and pulled away for a 74-52 win.

Entering Monday's PSAC crossover contest at the Hammermill Center, Millersville was winless on the road, and Gannon was a perfect 5-0 at home. It stayed that way despite a strong first half performance by the Marauders. Millersville (3-5), which has now dropped three in a row, shot 45.5 percent in the first half and took a 32-30 lead into the break. The Marauders opened the second with a 4-0 run, but 36-30 lead dwindled in a hurry.

A 3-pointer from Steve Piotrowicz ignighted a 12-0 Gannon run. Demond Vance, who scored a career-high 19 points for the Marauders, with the help of Bernard Brown managed to bring Millersville to within one at 42-41 with 14:06 left. But Millersville scored just seven points over the next 10 minutes, allowing Gannon to slowly widen its advantage.

The Marauders simply had no answer at the offensive end, shooting 9-of-31 (.290) in the second. They also came up empty on 10 3-point field goals. Gannon, meanwhile, torched the nets for 54.8 percent shooting in the half. Millersville finished the game with 25 turnovers.

Gannon's Stephen Battle led all scorers with 20 points. Vance was the only Marauder to reach double figures. Elijah Obade and Jim Kelleher both scored seven points.

In the first five games of the season, Millersville allowed just 60.0 points and 38.3 percent shooting. In its three game skid, however, the team is surrendering 76.7 points and 48.0 percent shooting per game.

The road gets no easier for the Marauders as they travel to unbeaten Clarion Tuesday. Game time is set for 8 p.m. Action can be heard on MSBN.
