Millersville, Pa. - Saturday's PSAC Eastern Division game between Millersville and Kutztown was decided in the first five minutes of the second half. Millersville trailed by just four before the visiting Golden Bears scored eight unanswered and held on for an 87-74 win, staying unbeaten in the PSAC East.
Kutztown (12-5, 5-0 PSAC East) won its fifth-straight game over the Marauders (7-9, 2-3 PSAC East) thanks to a potent 56.9 percent shooting from the field. The Kutztown guards penetrated into the paint all afternoon and Tamir Johnson was the benefactor, scoring 26 points on 12-of-15 shooting, pacing a team that scored 50 points in the paint.
Millersville shot just 39.1 percent from the field and made only 3-of-17 3-pointers but scratched and clawed to keep the game within reach. Bernard Brown scored the first points of the second half, bringing the Marauders to within 45-41. But Johnson scored four-straight points and Kutztown ran its lead to 12 before Jaymes Miller broke the run with a jumper of his own.
Miller turned in a career performance, scoring 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting. He scored nine points in the second half and Brown scored eight of his 10 in the second period. Brown scored on back-to-back possessions to bring Millersville to within 72-66 with 5:35 left. The Marauders, however, could get no closer, and after a Mike Seibert 3-pointer, they were outscored 10-2 over the final 2:53.
Seibert finished with 17 and made three threes and 6-of-7 from the line. Demond Vance, who did not start for the first time this season, scored seven, breaking a string nine-straight games in double figures.
Millersville has a quick turnaround. It travels to East Stroudsburg Sunday for a 3 p.m. tip. The game can be heard on MSBN.
