ABOUT THE GAME
· After snow postponed Wednesday's PSAC Eastern Division games, Millersville hosts division frontrunner Kutztown Saturday and hopes it can put the first blemish on the Golden Bears' perfect 4-0 division record. Millersville is an impressive 7-2 at Pucillo Gymnasium this year, but Kutztown enters as one of the hottest teams in the PSAC. The Marauders have won four of the last six including two in a row and are looking for their first three-game winning streak since the start of the 2009-10 season.
· Millersville has to solve its road problems in a hurry. All seven of the team's wins have come at Pucillo Gymnasium, and its 0-6 on the road. Four of the six road games have been decided by 10 points or fewer. The different isn't in the offense. It's in the team's defense. At home, Millersville is averaging 70.6 points and allowing 62.6 points on 37.9 percent shooting. On the road, the Marauders are scoring just 0.9 points per game less but are allowing 78.8 points per game on 49.1 percent shooting. Millersville is also averaging five rebounds fewer per game on the road.
· Millersville has received tremendous production from its freshman class. Freshman
Mike Holley (three) and
Jaymes Miller (one) have won four PSAC East Freshman of the Week awards. Holley is second on the team in scoring (11.4) and first in assists (4.1) and steals (1.9). He ranks third in the PSAC in assists, fourth in steals and ninth in assists/turnover ratio. Miller is on quite a roll as well. Over the last five games, he's averaging 11.8 points on 50.8 percent shooting and 5.0 rebounds per game.
· Bernard Brown had his own personal block party Saturday against West Chester, swatting eight shots--the second most in school history. In two-plus seasons as a Marauder, Brown has 129 blocks, ranking him fourth all-time. His average of 1.6 blocks per game is tied for the second-highest over a career. With 31 this year, he is 34 short of tying John Fox's Millersville record.
· Millersville ranks third in the PSAC in steals per game with 9.5. Four players on the team are averaging more than a steal per game. Along with Holley ranking fourth,
Demond Vance ranks 13th in the league at 1.6 per game. Millersville has recorded double-digit steals in eight games and is on pace for 239 steals, which would be the most since 2007-08.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
· Saturday's meeting is the 196th between Millersville and Kutztown. Millersville has played Kutztown more than any other opponent and with the exception of a six-year window around World War II, the two programs have played every year since 1906.
Fred Thompson has a winning record against the Golden Bears, but Kutztown has dominated the series in recent history, winning 10 of the last 12. Millersville's last wins came with a season sweep in 2007-08. In the last four games, Kutztown has averaged outscoring Millersville 81.3-64.5.
· After averaging 71.3 points per game in its non-conference games, Kutztown has hit its stride offensively and is averaging nearly 83 points per game against the PSAC East. It has hit at least 50 percent of its shots in three of the last four games. Kutztown's offense is balanced and talented, and any player can hurt you on a given night. Over the last five games, five different players have led the team in scoring. Two different players scored more than 25 points in that stretch. Seven times this year, a Kutztown players has scored more than 20 points in a game. Millersville has just two 20-point performances.
· Four Golden Bears are averaging double figures, led by Tamir Johnson (14.6) and Julius Gray (14.1). Johnson is also the team leader and ranks sixth in the PSAC in rebounds at 8.6 per game. He also ranks ninth in the PSAC in field goal percentage. Gray and Nate Edwards are both explosive scorers but are not the most efficient offensive players. Both players are shooting under 40 percent from the field and have more turnovers than assists.
