Millersville, Pa. - With
Mike Seibert hitting from 3-point range and
Bernard Brown patrolling the paint, Millersville earned a crucial 82-70 PSAC Eastern Division victory over West Chester Saturday in Pucillo Gymnasium.
Seibert drilled 6-of-9 from downtown to finish with 24 points, leading five Marauders in double figures. Brown played an outstanding all-around game, totaling 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. The senior swatted away eight shots, coming within one of the school record set in 1995 by Antwine Moore.
The win was huge for a surging Millersville (7-8, 2-2 PSAC East) club that has now won four of its last six. It evened the team's division record at 2-2 and pulled it within one game of .500. The hot-shooting Marauders hit 26-of-55 shots and sank a season-high 11 3-pointers. It was the first time this season that five players scored in double figures.
Just before halftime,
Jim Kelleher drilled a 3-pointer, giving the Marauders an eight-point lead at the break. That momentum carried into second half and Millersville hit five of its first seven shots of the period. Seibert started warming up after hitting a pair of threes within a three-minute span that put Millersville up 14 with just over 16 minutes to play. Millersville went three minutes without a bucket, but Seibert ended the drought at 13:17 with five points on back-to-back possessions. Junior
Demond Vance added a fastbreak layup and Seibert hit from deep again, giving Millersville a 59-39 lead and capping a 10-0 run.
West Chester employed a full court press to pull itself back into contention, but the closest it came was 74-67 with 2:12 to go. Millersville, which shot 13-for-21 in the second period, did some damage at the free throw line, hitting 15-of-19 foul shots.
West Chester also helped itself with 29 second chance points on 24 offensive rebounds.
Millersville received 11 points and six assists from freshman
Mike Holley, and 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from
Jaymes Miller. Vance continued his offensive production, scoring 10 points to give him double figures in nine-straight games.
The home team has now won the last five games in the series, and Millersville improved to 93-89 all-time against the Golden Rams.
Millersville now has to leave the friendly confines of Pucillo Gymnasium and head to East Stroudsburg Wednesday for a PSAC East showdown. Game time is 8 p.m.
