ABOUT THE GAME
· Millersville and West Chester meet today in similar positions. Both teams are 1-2 in the PSAC Eastern Division and need Saturday's game to stay in the playoff mix. The Marauders knocked off Cheyney 73-70 Wednesday behind 18 points from
Demond Vance. That same night, West Chester dropped a 73-62 decision at home to Kutztown. It was West Chester's second-straight defeat, and after a 7-1 start, the Golden Rams have dropped four of the last seven. Millersville, meanwhile, has won three of its last five.
· The series between Millersville and West Chester has been closely contested throughout its history. Dating to 1904, Millersville holds a slight 93-89 lead in the series. Even in total number of points scored, the teams are seperated by just 48 (10,957-10,909). Last year, Millersville won 66-63 at home but was trounced 58-38 on the road. The last four meetings have gone to the home team.
Fred Thompson has a winning record against all but two teams in the PSAC East. West Chester is one of those teams. Thompson is 11-15 against the Golden Rams.
· Wednesday's win over Cheyney was much needed for the Marauders. The team had been plagued by sluggish second-half play all year, but it managed to overcome that problem by shooting a season-high 50.8 percent. Still, the Marauders were out-scored by 10 points in the second half. But even when the team has lost, its been close. Five of Millersville's eight losses have been by 10 points or less. Both of West Chester's PSAC East losses have been by double figures.
· Among PSAC teams, Millersville ranks 15th in scoring offense and 15th in field goal percentage (.404). That ranking, however, is slightly skewed and not indicative of Millersville's recent play. The Marauders failed to shoot 40 percent from the field in their first five games. But over the last nine games, the Marauders are averaging 70.8 points per game and shooting 42.6 percent. Millersville is 5-0 when shooting a higher percentage than its opponent.
· Much of the improvement offensively has come from
Demond Vance and
Jaymes Miller. The duo has its stride. Over the last nine games, Miller has scored in double figures six times, and Vance has scored in double figures in eight-straight games.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
· West Chester boasts the PSAC's fourth-ranked offense, scoring 75.9 points per game. It is a balanced attack, though, with seven players averaging more than 7.0 points per game and no player scoring more than 13.0 points per game. The Golden Rams also rank third in scoring defense, allowing just 66.1 points per game and holding teams to 40.8 percent shooting.
· The opening three games to PSAC East play has not been easy. West Chester knocked off Mansfield in the opener 86-74 behind 16 from Shannon Givens. Mansfield is now 2-1 in league. Kutztown and East Stroudsburg also downed West Chester, and those two teams are now at the top of the division. The biggest reason for the Golden Rams two-game skid is lack of production offensively. They shot 40 percent against East Stroudsburg and just 33.3 percent against Kutztown. They also committed 39 turnovers to 19 assists in those games.
· Shannon Givens is West Chester's leader in scoring at 12.3 points per game. He's the team's top playmaker, ranking fourth in the PSAC in assists with 3.9 per game. But Givens can run hot and cold. He leads the team in field goal attempts but is shooting just 37.0 percent from the field. Givens and Eli Daniel are the team's leaders in 3-pointer attempts but both are shooting under 30 percent from behind the arc.
