ABOUT THE GAMES
· Millersville suffered a heart-breaking overtime defeat in Wednesday's PSAC Eastern Division opener. The Marauders led by as many as 17 points in the first half, but fell at Bloomsburg, 91-87. While the team is 0-6 on the road this year, it is 5-1 at home, so a return to Pucillo Gymnasium is just what it needs. The Marauders take on Mansfield today. Both teams are in search of PSAC East wins, and the Mountaineers are trying to end a two-game slide after falling to Slippery Rock 72-65 and at West Chester, 85-74.
· Millersville and Mansfield first met in 1933, and the Marauders control the all-time series, 79-52. Mansfield, however, has won four in a row over the last two seasons. Dating back to 2007-08, the last six games have been decided by single digits. Last year, Mansfield won 67-64 at home and 76-68 at Pucillo.
· Against Bloomsburg, four Marauders scored in double-figures. It was the first time all season that four Millersville players scored more than 10 points in the same game.
Mike Holley totaled 19, giving him double-figures in three-straight and in eight of 12 games this year.
Demond Vance, though, is the hottest player on the team. He has 18 points in back-to-back games and has scored 10 or more in six-straight. He's shooting an efficient 46.6 percent on the season and over his last six games, he is hitting 49.4 percent of his shots. He is averaging 16.7 points, 3.2 assists and 2.2 steals per game.
· Jaymes Miller is quickly emerging into one of Millersville's top offensive players. The rookie started the year slowly, scoring double-figures in just two of his first 10 games. His last two games have been productive, totaling 11 points and seven rebounds against Edinboro and a career-high 14 points against Bloomsburg. He's averaging 11.3 points per game in his last three. His shooting percentage in that stretch is 48.4 percent.
· Millersville is among the least efficient offensive teams in the league, shooting 40.1 percent from the field and 29.0 percent from 3-point range. The team ranks 15th in the 16-team league in both categories. Millersville has not made more than 50 percent of its shots in a game this year, but is 4-0 when posting a higher shooting percentage than its opponent. Of the eight players that lead Millersville in shot attempts, only its four post players and Vance are shooting higher than 40 percent.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
· Mansfield enters the game looking to rebound from a 72-65 loss at Slippery Rock and an 86-74 loss to West Chester. The Mountaineers are 4-2 away from home with wins at Lock Haven, District of Columbia and two at Mercyhurst. As a team, the Mountaineers are shooting 42.8 percent from the field and allowing 42.1 percent shooting. It's not the most accurate 3-point shooting team, hitting just 29.0 percent from long range. Only two players on the team have made more than 10 3-pointers this year. Tony Fannick has made 11-of-38 (.289) and Derrison Anthony has hit 14-of-30 (.467).
· Mansfield is led by All-PSAC East post player Yuseff Carr. The senior ranks 14th in the league in scoring (14.3) and 10th in rebounding (7.5). He's also the top shot blocker with 22. Derrison is averaging 13.2 points per game and also has a team-high 23 steals. He has dominated Millersville over the last two years, averaging 17.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks while shooting 55.6 percent. Millersville has lacked size the last two seasons, but three years ago, in two match-ups with
Bernard Brown, Carr shot a combined 2-of-10 from the field, scoring a total of five points and committing five turnovers. Brown, meanwhile, averaged 10 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks.
· Fannick is a steady, veteran of the PSAC and is averaging 11.2 points per game. Josh Dupuy is the team leader in assists with 43. He's committed 32 turnovers--an average of 2.5 per game.
