Women's Soccer Stifled by Slippery Rock

Box Score

Slippery Rock, Pa. — Slippery Rock's offense hounded the Millersville women's soccer team all afternoon and picked up a pair of goals in each half as the Marauders fell 4-0 in their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

Ashley Paganie put The Rock (4-0, 1-0 PSAC) up a goal 20 minutes into the game. Paganie finished off a Juliana Howell cross for her third goal of the 2010 campaign. Paganie would have a hand in Slippery Rock's second goal of the day as well. The senior found Danielle Turner in the 36th minute and Turner fired a shot into the net off of Millersville (0-3, 0-1 PSAC) keeper Kelsey Benson.

The Rock took the two-goal lead to halftime, but Slippery Rock's dominance showed through in scoring chances and shots. For the half SRU had 12 shots to Millersville's three.

The second half saw Slippery Rock continue its shooting display. The Rock wound up holding a 22-4 shot advantage for the game. Benson did her best to keep the Marauders in it, however. The sophomore from Elizabethtown came up with eight saves— the most she's been called upon to make so far this season.

Slippery Rock would finally break the Marauders again and cement the game with two goals in 2:29. Alyssa Barrett made it 3-0 for the home side at 75:15. Barrett's goal was her first of the year and Paganie picked up another helper for a four-point afternoon.

Rachel Knapp then beat Benson at 77:44 to extend the lead to 4-0. Freshman Laura Reed would relieve Benson after the Knapp goal, playing the final 10 minutes in net for Millersville.

The Marauders did not make life difficult on Slippery Rock keeper Dana O'Neill. O'Neill only had to make two saves in picking up the shutout. Niki Roberts and Alison Silva had Millersville's only shots on goal.

The 0-3 start is Millersville's first since 2006. The Marauders will be back in action Saturday evening when they host Lock Haven at Chryst Field at 5 p.m.
