Schook's Double Overtime Goal Shocks Marauders

Box Score

East Stroudsburg, Pa. — A goal in the final few minutes of regulation from Andrew Dukes gave the Millersville men's soccer team rejuvenated life on Saturday night at East Stroudsburg. Unfortunately it wasn't quite enough, as Greg Schook's goal with 3:06 left in double overtime lifted the Warriors to a 3-2 victory over the Marauders in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

Shane Seabrook got the Marauders (4-2-1, 2-2 PSAC) off to a fast start when he finished off an Aaron Roland pass in the 13th minute. The goal was Seabrook's second in as many games, a surprise after the senior midfielder did not tally in 2009.

Millersville's lead would be short-lived. Shastri Spencer evened things up for East Stroudsburg (7-1, 3-1 PSAC) 12:01 later with an unassisted goal. The goal was Spencer's fifth of the season and it only began his big night.

1-1 remained the score at halftime and well into the second half. The next goal loomed large and it was the home side that would get it. Spencer found Michael Kane, who beat Matt Langione to give the Warriors a 2-1 advantage with 15 minutes left in regulation.

Kane was in-line to capture his first game-winning goal of the season, but the resilient Marauders would not let that happen. Pat Baffuto crossed a ball to the head of Dukes who beat ESU keeper Troy Hernandez to forge a two-all game with 3:33 to go. The goal was Dukes' fifth of the year and gave the Marauders a much needed boost heading into overtime.

With emotions in high-gear, the Black and Gold came close to taking its seventh straight game from the rival Warriors. Millersville, which hadn't suffered a defeat at Eiler-Martin Stadium since 2006 (three straight games), tested Hernandez with two shots in the overtime sessions.

Derek Lopez came close to ending the game just 56 seconds into the first overtime period when his shot drilled the crossbar for ESU. Despite applied pressure at the offensive end late in double overtime by the Marauders, it was ESU that would prevail. Just 24 seconds after a Roland shot attempt was smothered by Hernandez, Spencer found Schook for the game-winning header at 106:54 (3:06 left in double OT). The helper capped a four point night for Spencer and extended ESU's hot start to the season.

The visitors held a 19-16 shot advantage on Saturday evening, including a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. The Marauders also took nine corner kicks to East Stroudsburg's four. Hernandez made seven saves in the win, while Langione stopped three Warrior shots in taking the loss.

Millersville must regroup after dropping two PSAC games in just four conference matches. The Marauders are on the outside looking in at a conference playoff spot, although there are still five PSAC games remaining.

The Marauders won't take to the field again until next Saturday when they visit Wheeling Jesuit for a 1 p.m. matinee. Jesuit is the first in a line of three straight non-conference opponents for Millersville. PSAC play resumes for MU on Oct. 12, against California (Pa.).
