Scoreboard Sits Silent as Marauders Tie C.W. Post

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. — Not many teams have been able to keep the Millersville men's soccer team from putting a number up on the scoreboard over the last few seasons. C.W. Post became just the second team to do that in the last 46 games on Saturday night when they earned a 0-0 draw with the Marauders at Chryst Field.

The game had the typical making of a non-conference affair. The teams, largely unfamiliar with each other, tried to break each other's game plan. C.W. Post (1-3-1), which hasn't played Millersville (3-1-1) since the 2004 season —before any of the current staff or players were around— came out and pressed the tempo offensively. The Pioneers threw a bunch of their players forward and had goalkeeper Ed Shone trying to clean up any balls Millersville put over the top, or through, the C.W. Post defense.

That strategy seemed to work well for Andreas Lindberg's club as they held an 8-3 advantage in shots after 45 minutes. Matt Langione, one of the best statistical keepers in Millersville history, was called upon much more than usual in the opening half. The senior from York was up to the challenge turning away four shots.

As the game worn on in the second half, Millersville seemed destined to get a goal. Despite trailing the half in shots, 6-5, it was the Marauders that seemed to carry the play and tilt the field in their favor. Twice the Black and Gold came within inches of making it a 1-0 game. The first of those instances came about 25 minutes from the end of regulation. Shone came out to play a ball, but drilled it directly into the gut of Pat Baffuto. Baffuto was a bit stunned, probably trying to regain his air, as the ball headed towards an empty net. Luckily for Shone, Baffuto couldn't get to the ball in time and it slid just wide of the right goal post.

Shone's aggressiveness almost bit the Pioneers again with 10:45 remaining. Kyle Loughlin got free and pounded a ball right at Shone, who appeared to commit a handball outside of the 18-yard box. The play went on unwhistled and the Marauders remained in the scoreless deadlock.

Neither overtime period bore much offense, as C.W. Post turned its attention more towards getting out of town with a draw. The Marauders got a shot from nine different players in the contest. C.W. Post, which outshot the home side 17-9 got four shots from Joakim Ohlson and three from David Carlsson.

Langione was forced to make a season-high in saves for the second consecutive game. This time the backstop denied eight C.W. Post shots. It was the most saves for Langione since Oct. 13, 2008 when he stopped 11 West Virginia Wesleyan attempts. Shone made four saves at the other end for C.W. Post.

After back-to-back non-conference matches, Millersville gets back into PSAC play when it hits the pitch on Wednesday evening. The Marauders take on Bloomsburg in a re-match of the 2009 PSAC Semifinals. In that contest Millersville came out with a 2-0 victory. Bloomsburg is coming off a 1-0 upset of No. 9 Slippery Rock. Game time from Chryst Field is set for 5 p.m. This is Millersville last in a stretch of four straight home games. The Marauders will play the next three away from home before returning for a game with West Virginia Wesleyan on Oct. 9.
