Millersville Falls Twice in Mount Olive Tournament

Mount Olive, N.C. – Wrapping up day two of the Mount Olive Tournament, the Millersville women's volleyball team dropped non-conference matches to Fairmont State and Newberry, both by scores of 3-1. The Marauders went 0-4 in the tournament and now sit at an overall record of 3-4.

Millersville matched up with Fairmont State early Saturday morning and jumped to a quick lead with a first-set 25-21 victory. The Fighting Falcons (5-3) quickly rallied to win the next three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-14, 25-19 and secured the match victory.

Allison Huss led the Black and Gold with a double-double, posting 11 kills and a career-high 31 digs. Mary Paul recorded a season-high 10 kills and Jesse Miller and Alyssa Ott each chipped in seven kills. Lauren Schmickle totaled a season-high 31 assists while Jessica Franz tallied 12.
 
Defensively, Katie Galuska collected a career-high 29 digs and Sue Caramanico added 18.

The Marauders then took on the Wolves (5-3) for their last match of the tournament, ultimately falling in four sets by scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 27-25. Newberry took an early 1-0 lead but the Millersville evened the score in the second set.

The Wolves glided to an easy third-set win to take back the lead but the Marauders would not back down, taking the fourth set into extra points. Newberry finished with two-straight kills to lock in the fourth-set, as well as the match victory.

Franz led the Millersville offense with a season and career-high 29 assists. Galuska tallied 25 digs and Kelsey Gearhart collected a season-high 17.

Ott posted a team-high 10 kills in the match and Huss chipped in nine. Paul put up numbers all across the board, posting six kills, one service ace, five digs and eight blocks.

Galuska was honored by being the only Marauder named to the all-tournament team after totaling 103 digs overall on the weekend.

Box scores for the matches are not immediately available.

Millersville returns home to host the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia for its first dual match of the season. The match-up is slated for Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in Pucillo Gymnasium.
