West Chester, Pa. - The Millersville men's basketball team trailed West Chester by just four points at half time of Sunday's PSAC East contest at Hollinger Field House. The Marauders, however, managed just 13 second half points and were dealt a 58-38 defeat.
Millersville (7-14, 2-7 PSAC East) made 3-of-23 shots in the second period and shot 22.9 percent on the game. The 38 points scored were not only the fewest of the season but also marked the lowest point total by a Millersville team since the 1947 club scored 37 in a loss to Mansfield.
Mike Seibert was the only Marauder to hit double figures. Eight of his 11 points were scored in the first period, though.
Brandon Widener scored eight points but was blanked in the second half.
The Marauders' knack for keeping opponents in check this season continued Sunday with West Chester (14-7, 3-5 PSAC East) becoming the 11th team to score fewer than 70 points against them. The deliberate offense and tough defense limited West Chester to just 29 first-half points, and the Marauders even led with 7:48 left in the first. The Marauders, though, went scoreless over the final 3:05 of the half.
That drought was only the beginning for the Marauders. After
Jason Blake scored on a lay-up 1:04 into the second, the team failed to score for more than three minutes. Seibert broke the streak with a 3-pointer, cutting West Chester's advantage to 36-30. But it took Millersville 5:30 to score again, and it managed just eight points over the final 15:54 of the game.
West Chester played a steady game throughout, shooting 46.2 percent in the first half and 41.7 percent in the second. The Golden Rams received a pair of stellar performances from Ralph Hegamin and Kehinde Roberts. Hegamin, one of only three players in the PSAC to rank among in the top five in scoring and rebounding, totaled 16 points and 14 rebounds. Roberts led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
Millersville will look to put an end to its four-game skid Wednesday at Pucillo Gymnasium against Shippensburg. Game time is 8 p.m.
