Box Score
Millersville, Pa. - It was
Demond Vance's night. The junior carried a sluggish Millersville squad with 13 second-half points and drilled a 3-pointer as regulation expired to send Thursday's game with University of the Sciences into overtime. In the extra session, Millersville did its damage at the free throw line and pulled away for a 64-57 victory.
USciences (4-2) entered the game with four-straight wins over PSAC Eastern Division schools, but the Marauders put an end to that streak and started one of their own. Millersville (3-2) has now won back-to-back games for the first time since December of 2009.
The win didn't come easily and with six seconds left in regulation, the Devils' William Kernan sank a free throw to put his squad up 51-48.
Anthony Coleman took the inbound pass and raced it across the time line where he called timeout with three ticks on the clock.
On the ensuing play,
Mike Seibert tried to pass it in to
Jim Kelleher, but the 3-point specialist failed to handle it cleanly. Instead, he tipped it to Vance who fired the game-tying shot from right in front of Millersville's bench. As the ball ripped the twine, the buzzer sounded and the score locked at 61.
Millersville carried its momentum into overtime and went on the attack against the Devils' stingy 2-3 zone. The attacking Marauders drew 20 free throw in the period. Its only field goal came from Vance with 1:51 left.
Tyrone Mann-Barnes, who led all scorers with 22, tried to keep the Devils close. He hit a long 3-pointer with 36 seconds to go, but Coleman and Seibert each hit one from the line, and
Rob Wyley clinched the win with two made free throws with seven seconds left.
Vance, who had scored just 12 points in his previous three games combined, led the Marauders with a career-high 19. He stepped up on a night that the rest of the team struggled to score. Millersville shot just 34 percent from the field and 4-of-16 from 3-point range.
USciences certainly had something to do with the shooting. The Devils entered the game allowing just 59.6 points per game. Its deliberate offense and zone defense had held East Stroudsburg, West Chester and Bloomsburg all under 55 points.
After building a 31-26 lead at the half, Millersville scored just 20 points in the second. The Marauders led 42-35 after a Coleman free throw with 11:22 left in the game but score only four points over the next 11:02. USciences jumped in front by as many as four with a 15-4 run.
Millersville received 10 rebounds from sophomore
Elijah Obade. Seibert added nine points and three steals.
With the win, Millersville improved to 6-0 all-time against USciences.
The Marauders travel to Goldey-Beacom on Monday, Dec. 13. Game time is 7 p.m.
