Marauders Blank Wheeling Jesuit 2-0

Box Score

Wheeling, W.Va. —
A first half goal from Kyle Loughlin and a second half insurance marker from Andrew Dukes lifted the Millersville men's soccer team a 2-0 victory over Wheeling Jesuit in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. The shutout is the Marauders' second in as many seasons against Jesuit.

The Marauders (5-2-1) had a week to prepare for the Cardinals (5-5), and still had the sour taste of a double-overtime loss to East Stroudsburg lingering in their mouths. Three shots went awry for the visitors before Loughlin took an Aaron Roland pass and placed it in the net for a 1-0 lead. The goal was the fourth of the season for the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Year.

Despite five first period shots, Wheeling Jesuit could not break Millersville keeper Matt Langione. The senior from York made three saves in the opening 45 minutes, keeping the Cardinals at bay.

Dukes would provide his squad with a two-goal cushion in the 75th minute. Loughlin fed the ball to the freshman, who then beat WJU keeper Shane Young. Dukes' team-leading sixth tally of the season would stand up as the final goal on the afternoon.

The Black and Gold came into Saturday's contest ranked sixth in the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com Atlantic Region poll, while the Cardinals entered the day ranked eighth.

In a twist of irony the win was Millersville's second straight over Wheeling Jesuit by the exact score of 2-0. Last season the Marauders were able to replicate Saturday's success on their home turf at Chryst Field. The win gave Millersville a 2-1 edge in the all-time series, and was also its first in Wheeling. The only other time the teams met prior to 2009 was a 1993 contest in Wheeling, which Jesuit won 3-1.

Langione would make two more saves in the second half to finish with five for the game. Millersville doubled Jesuit up in shots, holding a 14-7 edge. Loughlin and Roland led the Marauders in that category as each forward attempted four shots.

The Marauders continue their stretch of three straight non-conference matches on Wednesday when they travel to Philadelphia University for a 4 p.m. game.
