Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's soccer team took and early lead against No. 4 California (Pa.) when sophomore
Lindsay Wilson found the back of the net in the first ten minutes of action to put the Marauders up, 1-0. Millersville was able to keep the Vulcans in check for most of the first half. But in the second, California showed why it is the No. 4 team in the country after coming away with a 7-1 victory at Millersville Wednesday evening.
The Marauders defense shined early keeping the Vulcans off balance in the neutral zone by disrupting pass after pass. In the early 10 minutes California was leading in shots by a 7-2 margin. Millersville keeper Taylor Suskie had two brilliant saves on shots fired from inside the box.
On the Marauders' second shot they found the answer they have been missing the last three games: an opening goal. Wilson found herself in control of the ball after a Vulcan mishandle coming down the left side of the field, attacking right. California keeper Paula Jackson crept out to the edge of the box to get an angle on the Millersville attacker. Jacksons' challenge was not good enough as Wilson snuck the ball in the far right corner of the goal to put the Marauders up 1-0 early on. Wilson, usually a defender, showed her ability to strike as she started the night as a forward.
Despite being in check for most of the first half the Vulcans were able to get two goals by the Millersville keeper. Current PSAC Player of the Week Bethany Smyda put California on the board first from a long lead-through pass by teammate Carley Work to knot the game, 1-1. The Vulcans' next goal--eventual game winner--came late in the first from Erin Feltz on a rebound save initially shot by Kamilla Lillefjaere to go into half with a 2-1 lead.
Millersville was never able to recover in the second half. California was able to score five more in the second having seven unanswered goals to finish out the evening. Smyda finished with two goals and an assist to continue her dominance in the PSAC. But it was teammate Lillefjare that took control of the game scoring two goals while assisting on three others.
Suskie finished the game with ten saves--a career best--for the Marauders before being put back in the field of play as a forward late in the match. Senior Olivia Taylor registered two shots on goal while two more Marauders registered one.
