Box Score
Millersville, Pa. – Junior Aaron Roland headed the ball past Vulcan keeper Derek Yobbi to put the Marauders up 2-0 with under twenty minutes to play. California (Pa.) was able to score late to make it 2-1, but that was not enough as Millersville earned their third victory in PSAC play Tuesday evening.
It was a first half full of aggression with both teams recording more fouls than shot attempts. The rivalry was still boiling from two heated postseason contests in 2008. Millersville picked up 12 fouls in the half while Cal U landed just three. The third foul on the Vulcans turned out to be a costly one.
Mid-way through the first half senior Kyle Loughlin was hauled down in the attack box earning a penalty kick for the second game in a row. Loughlin was injured on the foul and was unable to kick. He returned later in the second half.
Freshman Andrew Dukes stepped in to take the penalty kick for the Marauders in place of his injured teammate. The whistle blew and Dukes set his feet. Cal U keeper Yobbi--one week removed from a PSAC Player of the Week Award--dove left as he watched the ball go right and ripple the net. Dukes' ninth goal of the season put Millersville up, 1-0. With that score, Dukes tied a Millersville record for most goals in a season by a true freshman.
The second picked up where the first left off. This time it was the Vulcans earning a high 10 fouls. The Marauders earned a corner kick after pressuring the Cal U defense with twenty minutes remaining in regulation. Bandaged-up Pat Baffuto set up to take the corner kick. Baffuto was subbed out twice during the game with facial lacerations to both sides of his face.
Despite the injuries, Baffuto curved to ball into the crowd of players. The 6-5 Roland emerged from the group and headed it to the right corner of the goal to give Millerville a 2-0 cushion.
In the final minutes and after an exchange of yellow cards, the Vulcans were finally able to find a strike.
Russell Bootwright sent a lead-through pass to Nemanja Viserunk who cut the Marauder lead in half with fewer than two minutes to play. The Vulcans were unable to find the equalizer as Millersville controlled the ball the rest of the way.
The Marauders continue play Saturday, Oct. 16, at Shippensburg. Action is to start a 4 p.m.
