Millersville, Pa. - Senior
Jason Blake carried the Millersville men's basketball team down the stretch Saturday against Bloomsburg. He had a hand in eight of Millersville's final 10 points including the go-ahead free throws and a game-clinching rebound in the final seconds of overtime that sealed a 61-57 victory. The win gave Coach
Fred Thompson No. 200 in his 12-year Millersville career.
Blake totaled 21 point, six rebounds and five assists. He scored five of the Marauders' eight overtime points and assisted on a lay-up from
Nigel Davis. His pull-up jumper with 45 seconds left in regulation put the Marauders up by three and proved crucial because Bloomsburg's Jesse Betar hit a 3-pointer seconds later to tie the game and send into overtime.
The win improved Millersville to 7-10 overall and more importantly 2-2 in the PSAC East as it tries to stay in the conference playoff picture. Thompson's career mark boosted to 200-131, and he became just the third coach in school history and the second fastest to reach the 200-win milestone.
Bloomsburg (6-10, 0-4 PSAC East) suffered their third-straight loss in overtime. The Marauders improved to 2-1 in overtime games this year.
It took a furious rally for the Marauders to just get the game into overtime. After surrendering a six-point lead late in the first half, the Marauders fell behind early in the second and trailed for more than 15 minutes until sophomore
Mike Seibert buried a 3-pointer with 1:37 left, putting the Marauders ahead 51-50. Bloomsburg missed a jumper on the next possession, and
Rob Wyley got the ball back in Millersville hands with a save as he fell out of bounds.
Blake pushed the advantage to 53-50 with a driving score for two, but Betar's three knotted the game with 16 ticks left. Millersville's final chance to break the tie ended in a turnover.
Bloomsburg took an early overtime lead with a dunk from Larry Webster and a pair of free throws by Adon El. But Blake was up to the challenge. He fed Davis for an easy lay-up and then drove for another two to tie the game at 57 with 2:08 left. Senior
Palmer McDurfee picked the pocket of Jamar Smack with 1:23 left to give the Marauders an opportunity for the lead. Blake did just that, drawing a foul and then hitting both free throws to put the Marauders in front for good.
McDurfee and Blake each hit two free throws in the waning seconds to extend the lead.
Millersville had to overcome a poor shooting night to notch the win. They connected on 20-of-53 attempts and hit 3-of-13 3-pointers. The difference proved to be at the line, where Millersville hit 18-of-26, including 14-of-18 in regulation. Bloomsburg was slightly better from the field, sinking 21-of-54 shots.
Davis scored 10 to join Blake in double figures. Wyley and
Alen Ahmetovic tied for game-high honors with seven rebounds.
Millersville travels to Cheyney Wednesday evening for a PSAC East contest. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m.
