Millersville, Pa. — The sixth-ranked Millersville men's soccer team goes in search of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoff berth as rival East Stroudsburg comes to call at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
Meetings between the two schools in the last couple of seasons have been high-energy affairs, but the Marauders have held the upper hand. The Warriors, a perennial soccer power, hold a 41-12-3 advantage in the all-time series, but Millersville has emerged victorious in the last five meetings, including a 3-2 overtime win in the 2008 PSAC Semifinals.
Both teams were nationally ranked in all three 2008 meetings, but East Stroudsburg has struggled to a 4-5-1 record over its first 10 games of 2009. The Warriors are just 1-2-1 (4 points) in PSAC Eastern Division play and could be in danger of missing the conference playoffs for the first time since 2005. ESU currently sits third in the East, behind Millersville and Bloomsburg.
Back on Sept. 2, Millersville went into East Stroudsburg and emerged with a 1-0 victory in the conference opener for both teams.
Anthony Pagnotti scored the only MU goal nearly 10 minutes into the game, and leading-scorer
Kyle Loughlin picked up an assist, as the Marauders held ESU without a shot on goal. It was the Black and Gold's third straight win at East Stroudsburg, dating back to 2007.
With a win, the Marauders would clinch a third-straight trip to the PSAC playoffs and would do so just five games into their eight-game conference slate. MU currently sits atop the Eastern Division with a 4-0 record (12 points). Millersville holds a 7-1 overall record, with a 3-2 overtime loss at Wilmington (Del.) on Sept. 16 the only setback to date.
Loughlin leads the Marauders into Wednesday night's battle with a team-high 12 points (4 goals, 4 assists) and two game-winning goals. MU has also enjoyed offensive contributions from sophomores
Pat Baffuto (3 goals, 2 assists, 8 points) and
Dan Prian (2 goals, 3 assists, 7 points). Prian is coming off of a game on Saturday against Lock Haven in which he scored two goals —including the game-winner— in a span of 1:33.
Matt Langione continues to perform solidly in net, entering the ESU game with a 0.79 goals against average and 5.5 shutouts.
The Warriors will rely upon their leading scorer, Toric Robinson, and goalkeeper Larry Pokrywa if they are to emerge victorious. Pokrywa has an 0.89 goals against average this season and three shutouts. The senior has started 43 games at keeper during his career and was the 2007 PSAC Championship MVP as a sophomore.
Beyond the game, Millersville will be participating in the 'Red Card Cancer' program on Wednesday. The program is designed to bring awareness through the soccer coaching community to the fight against cancer. Teams will wear specially designed t-shirts during pregame warm-ups that will feature the "Red Card Cancer" logo. A collection will be taken up during the game for the American Cancer Society. T-shirts featuring the 'Red Card Cancer' logo will also be available for purchase at the game on Wednesday and all money raised from t-shirt sales will go to the 'Red Card Cancer' program.
The Marauder Sports Broadcasting Network (MSBN) will have the call of the action, with Dominic Panza doing the play-by-play and Ben Longenecker handling the color commentary. Coverage will begin shortly before 7:30 p.m. and fans can listen live online by
