Millersville, Pa. - After a layoff of nearly six months, the Millersville women's tennis team returned to the courts victorious Friday, beating University of the District of Columbia 5-4 and evening its record at 6-6.
The day began with a bleak start, however, as Millersville dropped its first three singles matches in close fashion, with one set in each match reaching a tie-breaker.
Jenny Habecker picked the Marauders' first victory of the day by dominating Chantel Henry in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
Shauna Powers fared almost as well for Millersville, beating Firebird Sakiea Watford 6-1, 6-1.
The teams split the doubles matches, with Marauders
Samantha Souders and
Jackie Jaffe losing the first match 6-8, and
Michelle Destefano and
Amanda Carello winning the final match, 8-2.
The Marauders were helped by a pair of forfeits from the Firebirds -- one match in singles and one in doubles -- which gave Millersville the team victory despite only winning three of the seven matches played.
The Marauders travel to Slippery Rock Tuesday for a match against one of the best teams in the PSAC. The Rock is 12-2 on the season and 5-0 at home.
