Cheyney Never Cools Off in Beating Marauders

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. —
Guard Tyrone Smith led the way with 16 points and his teammates followed suit as Cheyney handed the Millersville men's basketball team a 77-60 defeat at Pucillo Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Consecutive dunks by Roberto Townsend and Dominique Curry to start the game helped the Wolves (11-5, 4-1 PSAC East) set the pace in the early going. Millersville (6-12, 0-5 PSAC East) responded with 3-pointers from freshman Brandon Widener and junior Palmer McDurfee and a jumper by senior Reggie Bates to claim its first lead of the game at 10-9 with 11:39 to play in the opening stanza.

Another 3-pointer from McDurfee gave the Marauders a 17-16 lead with 10:03 to go in the half, but Cheyney used a 17-2 run over the next 7:08 to build a 33-19 lead as the first half neared an end. Zaire Newton knocked down a trey and Tyrone Smith nailed two more shots from beyond the arc, as the Wolves shot a perfect 5-for-5 from downtown in the first half. Newton and Smith headed to the half with nine and eight points respectively, but their teammates also pitched in. As a team, Cheyney shot 53.3-percent (16-for-30) from the floor in the first half and took a 38-27 lead to the locker room.

The second half played out much like the first. Smith fueled a quick 7-0 run to start the half and suddenly the Wolves had an 18 point lead. Cheyney kept firing (and hitting) as it ran the lead up to 27 with 8:10 to play. Widener did his best to get the Marauders back in the game, collecting five points in an 11-0 Millersville run. Freshman Cullen Murray-Kemp finished that run with a three of his own that cut the Cheyney lead to 15 at 72-57 with 2:20 to play. The Wolves would answer with a three on their next possession and the Marauders would get no closer.

With the loss, Millersville has now dropped six in a row, its longest losing streak since the 2005-06 season. Cheyney matched its first half total, shooting 53.3-percent (16-for-30) in the second half as well. The Wolves also shot 53.3-percent (8-of-15) from three-point range. Cheyney held a 36-9 advantage in bench points and the Wolves' reserves shot 65-percent (15-for-23) from the floor. Bates led four Marauders in double-figures with a team-high 14 points. McDurfee finished with 13, Widener had 10, and Makal Stibbins chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds on the evening.

Millersville will be back at Pucillo looking for its first PSAC East win on Saturday afternoon. The Marauders take on Mansfield, with game time set for approximately 3 p.m. Fans can tune in to all the action on MSBN.
