Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville men's tennis squad picked up its first victory of the 2008 season Wednesday with a 6-3 victory over visiting Philadelphia.
The two teams split the six singles bouts evenly, but Millersville swept a tightly contest doubles competition to ensure the win. With the win, the Marauders even their season record at 1-1.
Drew Slocum and Andrew Sorgi notched an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 tandem of Mark Treires and Dusty Speicher won 9-7. In the No. 3 slot, Freshman Donald Swantko and senior Marty O'Hora notched an 8-5 win.
In singles action, Swantko battled Tom McAvoy for a 4-6, 6-4, (10-8) win. Speicher defeated Borys Jarosz 8-5 at No. 6 singles. At No. 2 singles, Makowski dropped the first set to Eric Guerrero, 2-6, but evened the match with a 6-4 second-set win. Guerrero retired following the second set to give Makowski the win.
Wednesday's match was Millersville's fall home finale. The team returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 25 at Delaware State before heading to the ITA Regionals from Oct. 4-6.
