Women's Soccer Holds On in Season Opener

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's soccer team was able to withstand a late scoring opportunity from its Philadelphia University foes in recording a 2-1 season opening victory at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Sarah Cameron put the Marauders (1-0) ahead just 1:59 into the game when she took a cross from sophomore Kate Moeller and tapped it home. Freshman Niki Roberts also picked up a helper on the goal.

Unfortunately for Millersville, its lead disappeared a mere 56 seconds later. Natalie Vespe was able to sneak one in on a scrammble in front of the net, tying the game 1-1.

The game would settle down following the quick start, with the teams heading to the half still knotted at one.

The Maruaders didn't take long to get going again in the second half. Junior Nicki Conzentino was able to beat Rams' goalkeeper Sara Hall at the 47:01 mark to give Millersville the 2-1 lead.

The Rams (0-2) would bring some pressure in the second half, taking six shots. Senior Jaime Lancaster was able to turn away a late scoring chance in preserving the win for Millersville.

The Marauders will be back in action Wednesday afternoon in their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener when they travel to West Chester. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
