Hot Shooting Marauders Build Lead and Hold Off Holy Family

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. -
For the second-straight game, four Marauders scored double figures and for the second-straight game, the Millersville men's basketball team earned a victory. On Wednesday, it was Holy Family  that fell victim to Millersville's hot-shooting offense, 82-76.

Senior Reggie Bates led the team with 18 points, 12 of which came on four made 3-pointers. Jason Blake, in just his second game as a Marauder, scored a career-high 17 and handed out four assists to go with three steals and five boards. Senior Makal Stibbins turned in another stellar performance in the post, scoring 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting.

Stibbins' dead-eye accuracy must have been contagious as the Marauders shot 49.2 percent as a team and hit 9-of-24 3-pointers on the evening. It was the second game in a row that Millersville hit at least seven threes, and for the first time since the 2007 NCAA East Regional, the Marauders have scored 80 or more points in consecutive outings.

The Marauders built sizable leads in both halves, but Holy Family used its own potent offense to keep it interesting. Behind 26 points from Ceazer Johnson, the 0-3 Tigers shot 48.2 percent from the field and hit 10-of-21 from behind the arc.

Still, they could not keep up with Millersville and Reggie Bates. Bates entered the game firing, hitting a 3-pointer 18 seconds in and continued to hit two more threes and a lay-up to build Millersville's lead to 15-9 by the 15 minute mark. The first half advantage grew to as many as 14 on a pair of free throws by Blake, but Holy Family went on a 12-0 run close the half, and Johnson's jumper as time expired brought the Marauder's lead to one at 35-34.

Whatever momentum Johnson gave the Tigers was quickly halted in the second period when Bates hit for two, Palmer McDurfee drilled his only three of the game and Blake scored for two more on three-straight possessions. The Marauders pushed the lead out to 16 on a run that included eight points and three dunks by Stibbins.

Holy Family tried to crawl back and managed to cut the lead to five with 14 seconds left. But Millersville kept the Tigers at bay by hitting 10-of-12 free throws in the final 1:24.

McDurfee hit 4-of-4 from the stripe down the stretch. He finished with 11 points and a game-high seven assists.

Not only did Bates lead the team in scoring, but he also grabbed a team-high five rebounds and recorded two steals. Stibbins, who fouled out, grabbed three rebounds and added three steals and a block.

The Marauders improve to 2-0 for the second-straight season, but will receive a stiff test Saturday at C.W. Post. The Pioneers are currently ranked No. 14 in the NABC Division II Coaches Poll.
