Box Score
Millersville, Pa. — Sean McLaughlin's goal 17:13 into the game proved to be the only offense the Marauders needed and
Matt Langione diverted a Slippery Rock scoring chance in the final 10 seconds, as the No. 7 Millersville men's soccer team advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
The Marauders (18-3) were able to put early pressure on The Rock (14-7-1). That pressure led to McLaughlin's bullet in the 18th minute. The scoring opportunity came courtesy of some beautiful passing, with
Ryan Kiley and
Thomas Bargmann picking up assists on McLaughlin's 14th goal of the season.
Slippery Rock and Millersville played most of the remaining first half between the 18's as both squads found scoring chances tough to come by. The Rock recorded six shots on goal, while the Marauders were credited with three.
The second half began with a similar look, as quality scoring chances on either side were few and far between.
Slippery Rock would make one last ditch effort in the final minute when Josh Gauger sent a ball into the box from about 30 yards out. The ball bounced around in the box for a few seconds before Langione turned away Iain Langstone's point blank attempt. A Millersville defender was able to clear away the rebound as time expired giving the Marauders their first ever Atlantic Region title.
Langione finished with four saves and has now recorded back-to-back shutouts in the NCAA Division II Tournament. For his efforts, he was named the the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the regional. McLaughlin was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player.
Millersville moves on to face Northern Kentucky (16-2-3), who defeated the Midwest Region's top seed, Lewis, in penalty kicks on Sunday afternoon. The winner of that contest will earn a trip to Tampa, Fla. and a spot in the NCAA Division II Semifinals. The game will take be played at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
