Millersville

Darlene Newman

During almost all of the success that Mary Fleig has enjoyed during her career at Millersville, long-time assistant Darlene Newman has been by her side.

Newman, a Marauder standout in her own right, finished her 23rd season as an assistant with the Millersville women’s basketball program in 2016. She has helped Millersville to a 432-219 record, six PSAC East Championships and nine NCAA Division II Tournament appearances during her time on the staff.

Newman was also instrumental in the development of All-PSAC East First Team post players Aurielle Mosley, Danielle Marshall, Gladine St. Julien, and Raqueel Green. Prior to the 2013-14 season, at least one Millersville post player had earned All-PSAC East honors in eight-straight seasons dating back to 2003-04. Mosley most recently was named PSAC East Athlete of the Year in 2012-13, and set Marauder records in rebounding and blocked shots. Mosley and Kristy Garner--another Newman tutor--are the only players in school history to record 1,000 career points and rebounds.

The Pottstown, Pa., native earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology from Millersville in 1984. She also served as a member of the Millersville University Athletic Hall of Fame Committee.

As starter at forward an a four-year letterwinner from 1979-83 for Millersville, Newman helped lead the Marauders to a 59-32 record during her playing career. She was a three-time All-PSAC Eastern Division honoree. Newman totaled 1,305 points and stands seventh on Millersville’s all-time scoring chart. She averaged 14.8 points per game over her 88 career games, and her career scoring average is a program record.

An all-around athlete during her Millersville career, Newman was also a member of the 1982 women’s lacrosse AIAW National Championship team. With the rest of the team, she was inducted into the Millersville University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.

Prior to rejoining the program in 1992, Newman spent five summers coaching in the Pottstown Police Athletic League’s junior boys’ program. Currently, Newman is part of the Millersville Mentor Alliance Program, WBCA All-Star Challenge and the APSCUF Grievence Committee.
