Millersville

Dave Keeny

Keeny enters his fifth season at Millersville in 2012, serving as the team’s wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.

Keeny has an intimate knowledge of the PSAC, having served as the head coach at Kutztown from 1998-2005. In eight seasons, he became the third winningest coach in school history.

During his first season with Millersville, Keeny helped Andy Tischbein produce a career season with 50 catches, 722 yards and eight touchdowns. Tischbein was the first Millersville wide receiver to total 50 catches since 2004.

Keeny also helped Jamal Smith make the transition from quarterback to wide receiver. Smith excelled in the position switch, and in 2009, his first full season at the position, he became one of the PSAC's top wide receivers ranking among the leaders in scoring, receptions and all-purpose yards. Smith was named All-PSAC East Second Team.

Smith followed that performance with a record-setting campaign in 2010. He was the only player in the PSAC to top 1,000 yards receiving and became the first Marauder since 2000 to achieve All-America honors. Also, Matt Egenrieder emerged as a target, making Millersville the only team in the PSAC with two receivers ranked in the top 10 in receiving yards.

While at Kutztown, his program gained national acclaim, and Keeny’s 2000 squad tied a school record for wins in a season and his team’s also set or tied the school record for wins over a two-year, three-year and four-year period.

Prior to his appointment as head coach, Keeny served as the program’s offensive coordinator and associate head coach from 1993-97. Keeny also helped Division III Thomas More College establish its football program in 1990, and in 1992 as the team’s offensive coordinator, Keeny guided the team to an appearance in the Division III Playoffs.

Keeny spent one season as the passing game coordinator at Morehead State after working as a defensive line coach at Arizona in 1988. In 1986-87, Keeny served as a graduate assistant under legendary coach Joe Paterno at Penn State assisting with the quarterbacks and defensive backs. The 1986 team posted a 12-0 record and upset the favored Miami Hurricanes in the Fiesta Bowl to win the National Championship. The following season, he helped Penn State to an 8-4 record and a Citrus Bowl appearance.

He began his college coaching career as a graduate assistant at Virginia in 1984, and in 1985, the Cavaliers appeared in the Peach Bowl.

Keeny graduated from Kutztown in 1983 and also played running back for the Golden Bears from 1978-81. He is the father of two sons: Brandon and Matthew.
