Offense sputters as softball drops two to Lock Haven

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The Millersville Marauders dropped both ends of their Sunday afternoon divisional doubleheader against the visiting Lock Haven Bald Eagles by scores of 4–1 and 4–0. Despite the outcomes, the hosts received effective outings from all who toed the rubber; half of Lock Haven's eight total runs were unearned and Marauders head coach Jen Probst praised her team's effort in the circle when speaking postgame.

"I thought our pitchers did a great job today," Probst said. "They hit their spots, and they definitely threw better this time than the last time we played them."

Atop that list was the red-hot Mollie White, who threw 3.1 innings in relief of Delaney Troxell and didn't allow an earned run. White hasn't given up an earned run in four appearances, a total of 12.1 innings. Troxell held her own in that game; the Bald Eagles plated two runners in the first inning, but the freshman responded by setting down the next eight batters in order. Angelina Saverase went four innings to start game two and allowed two earned runs before being relieved by Nicolina Pezzone. The junior allowed a solo home run but struck out six in her three frames of work thanks to an electric fastball.

However, the team's woes at the dish continued. Millersville managed to put 17 runners on base between the two games but just one of those came around to score. Jocelyn Langer represented five of those runners as she tallied two hits, two walks, and a hit by pitch. Victoria Fuss had one of the team's two extra-base hits on the afternoon, a rocket double to center field that led off the fourth inning. Lexi Pickett was responsible for the other, a double to left field in the fifth inning of the nightcap.

Fuss' double represented the 100th career hit for the junior middle infielder. Carly Vaughan also made her way into the Marauder record books after being beaned by a pitch in the fourth inning. It was her 11th time being hit with a pitch this season, breaking the program record for most in a campaign; that was formerly held by Heather Lutz, who did it in 2015 and 2016, and Sam Fried, who did it last season. Vaughan got hit again in her next at-bat to extend that mark to 12.

The Marauders will have little time to ponder this one, as they get right back to it on April 14 at Mansfield. Those games are slated to begin at 1 and 3 p.m.
