Offensive explosion salvages split for softball at Mt. Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The Millersville Marauders matched a season-high in runs scored in a 12-1 game two blowout to escape Mount Olive with a split after falling 4–1 in the opener. Jiana Maniscalco and Victoria Fuss both had three hits in the win while Nicolina Pezzone and Angelina Saverase combined for five innings of three-hit ball.

After scoring one run through the day's first nine innings, the dam broke in the top of the third. With two on and two out, Hailey Watlington hit a double to bring home one run and Angelina Edwards followed with a two-RBI single. The next batter was hit by a pitch to bring up Maniscalco, who hit a wall-grazing long ball to make it 6–1 Marauders. The visitors scored six runs in the frame, all with two outs. They added to their lead in the fifth, tacking on five more runs with four hits, all singles.

"Our plate approaches were much better in game two," Millersville head coach Jen Probst said postgame of her team's offensive output. "We were swinging at strikes, whereas in game one we were chasing out of the zone."

Pezzone got the win and was the benefactor of those 12 tallies, although she and Saverase would have needed just two runs to get the win. The junior scattered three hits across four innings of work and allowed one unearned run while the senior completed a scoreless final frame. Mollie White kept the Trojans' bats at bay for four shutout innings in game one but back-to-back bunt singles to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning led to three Mt. Olive runs. To that point, she had allowed just three baserunners.

The game one loss was Millersville's first since dropping two games at Goldey-Beacom on Feb. 7. Between Feb. 8 and March 8, the Marauders won 10 straight games for the first time in program history. That streak topped the previous record of nine that's occurred twice–once in 1996 and once in 2018.

The Marauders look to add to another win streak on March. 10 when they travel to Shaw to take on the Bears at 1 and 3 p.m.
