ETTRICK, Va.— The Millersville Marauders started off their road trip with two excellent pitching performances and claimed their ninth and 10
th straight wins by beating the Virginia State Trojans by scores of 3–2 and 5–1 Saturday afternoon.
Mollie White and
Nicolina Pezzone executed well in the first game while game two was controlled by the right arms of
Angelina Saverase and
Delaney Troxell.
"All of our pitchers were ready from the first pitch they threw," Millersville head coach
Jen Probst said postgame of her pitching staff's success. "They were throwing strikes right away."
After tossing a complete-game shutout in her last outing, Pezzone got the start in game one. She was given an early lead when the Marauders plated two runs through aggressive baserunning in the top of the first and never relinquished it, giving up one run in 2.2 innings of work. White starred in relief, escaping a first-and-third jam with a fielder's choice upon entering in the third inning and then tossing three shutout frames before giving up a run in the seventh.
Saverase and Troxell one-upped their teammates in the second contest, combining for seven innings of one-run ball. The senior scattered six hits across four innings of work and let up the lone tally to earn her second win of the season. The freshman shut the Trojans down for the final three frames and struck out three batters to nab her second save.
The Marauders brought home the first two runs on an error and tacked on two more in the sixth with singles from
Kendra Bumgardner and
Allyson Black.
Jocelyn Langer stayed hot as well, extending her hit streak to 10 games and raising her season batting average to .515 with four hits on the day.
Millersville plays the second doubleheader of this road trip tomorrow, March 9 at Mount Olive. Game 1 begins at 1 p.m.
