MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — Millersville's
Nicolina Pezzone no-hit the visiting Jefferson Rams through five innings en route to her first career seven-inning complete-game shutout and the 1–0 victory. The Marauders completed the sweep with a 9–4 victory in game two on the strength of two-hit games from
Angelina Edwards and
Kendra Bumgardner, their fourth straight doubleheader sweep and eighth straight win.
It was all Pezzone in game one. Millersville scored its lone run in the bottom of the first on a
Carly Vaughan single and the bats remained silent until the second game despite some hard-hit outs. Pezzone faced the minimum through the first five frames, the lone baserunner being thrown out at second by Edwards trying to steal. Jefferson tallied its first hit on a bloop single with one out in the fourth. After a walk and another single, the bases were loaded. The Ram batter laced a line drive just within the reach of first baseman
Allyson Black, who took a couple steps and dove headfirst to tag first base and double off the runner at first base. Pezzone tallied strikeouts seven and eight to close it out in the seventh and complete the shutout.
"What's really great about Nicolina right now is she just keeps getting a little bit better every game, every inning," Marauders head coach
Jen Probst said postgame. "She was able to go a full seven and still mix pitches. The second time, third time through the lineup, we were able to call different pitch sequences, and she executed and got outs. Everything was working today."
Millersville's bats woke up in game two; four players had two or more hits and the team totaled 11. The top of the order did the bulk of the work, as Bumgardner went two-for-two with four runs scored and two runs batted in (RBI) while
Jocelyn Langer had two hits including a triple and scored three runs. Bumgardner's two RBI came when she smashed a two-run home run over the left field fence to extend the Marauders' lead to 4–1 in the third inning. The bat behind them driving in four of those seven runs scored was reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week Edwards, who had two hits and four runs batted in. She's totaled 18 RBI during the Marauders' win streak.
Millersville did a good job of manufacturing runs and taking advantage of the mistakes that the Ram's pitchers made; the hosts had four walks and totaled nine runs while stranding just six runners on base.
"Jefferson's pitchers were doing a great job of minimizing some of our big hits," Probst said postgame.  "So when we got runners on, we were able to find ways to move them, whether it was sacrifice flies, bunts, or just really good base running, which I think is going to be key for us, especially once we get to conference play."
The Marauders look to continue their winning ways when they head to Virginia State to take on the Trojans as part of their annual spring break trip. First pitch for game one is at 2 p.m. on March 8.
