SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - No. 20 Millersville scored three runs in the first inning,
Sam Morris hit a home run, and
Evan Rishell tossed 2 2/3 shutout innings in relief, helping Millersville to a 6-2 win over Shippensburg in the series finale and bouncing back after a 12-10 loss in Saturday's opener.
While the game one loss halted Millersville's (21-4, 7-1) 13-game winning streak, the game two win gave the Marauders a series victory over Shippensburg, which entered the weekend No. 6 in the NCBWA Atlantic Region poll.
GAME ONE
Millersville out-hit the Raiders 14-12 in game one, but three errors contributed to four unearned runs, as the Marauders surrendered a 6-1 lead. Shippensburg scored three in the fourth and piled on eight in the fifth. Millersville also issued five walks while striking out just four.
Donis Rodriguez contributed a career-high three hits, two doubles, two RBIs and two runs.
Jeff Sabater went 3 for 4 with a triple, two runs, and an RBI.
Bren Taylor drove in three and scored two runs.
GAME TWO
Taylor's RBI single and
Jimmy Kirk's two-run triple pushed the Marauders to a lead it never relinquished. Sabater singled home
Amani Jones in the second, and Morris blasted his third home run of the season in the third inning. There was no comeback for the Raiders in game two.
After giving up two runs in the first inning,
Garet Blankenbiller pitched three scoreless. Rishell picked up his third save of the season, first stranding two runners in the fifth and then blanking the Raiders in the final two frames.
Troy Chamberlin, playing in his hometown, hit the first home run of his career in the top of the seventh. Sabater and Taylor both had two hits.
NOTES
- Taylor went 6 for 11 with five runs and six RBIs in the four-game series. His three hits on Saturday jumped him to fourth in PSAC history, passing Shippensburg's Justin Garber (2005-08) with 290 career hits. Now, with 215 runs, he moved to within one of Kutztown's Shayne Houck (2009-12) for fourth all-time, and is just seven shy of breaking the Millersville record.
- Kirk had a hit in each of the last three games of the series and totaled four RBIs.
THOUGHTS FROM COACH JON SHEHAN
- On winning the series: "Ship is really good. They played well. Their pitching is outstanding. We would have liked to get four, but it was really good to get three. It's tough to go into a fourth game after a tough loss we like we had today and respond, but we did."
- On Taylor's weekend: "Bren has been outstanding. He's locked in, and it's a lot of fun to watch."
- On Kirk's offensive improvement: "Kirk just missed hitting a homer straight into the wind. He's been getting into better counts by swinging at better pitches and getting his swing off."
