Freshmen fuel game one victory against Bowie State

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — Bases loaded, two outs, and down by two. That was the situation that Marauders freshman Jocelyn Langer found herself in when stepping to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning. The rising star came through for Millersville, belting a bases-clearing double to put the hosts up 3–2. The Marauders would go on to win game one by that score before falling 2–1 to the Bowie State Bulldogs in the nightcap.

Delaney Troxell was the other half of the freshman duo that played a big role in the win. The Bulldogs had already plated two in the third inning when Troxell entered the game with runners on second and third and two outs. She needed just one pitch to procure a ground ball back to the circle, which she snagged and threw to first for the final out of the inning. The rookie then mowed down the Bowie State lineup for four more scoreless innings while allowing just one hit.

"They're super competitive, both on the field and in practice," Marauders head coach Jen Probst said of the 10 freshmen on her team. "They're always giving it 110%, which is great. Every single one of our 10 rookies has a great work ethic."

The Marauders threw well in game two, but the bats were quieted by a strong outing from the Bulldogs' starter. Nicolina Pezzone got the ball from the jump in game two and allowed two runs in five innings of work while striking out six. Mollie White closed it out with two shutout frames. Probst was complimentary of her staff when speaking postgame.

"We pitched well enough to win both of those games," Probst said. "Our pitchers were pounding the zone and hitting spots; we had very few misses from what I was calling. I was really happy to see that."

The game two loss marks just the second loss for the Marauders in the month of March. The Marauders had won seven straight heading into that contest and now have a record of 16–2 since Feb. 26. It also marks the end of Langer's base-hit streak, which also began on Feb. 26 and ended at 17 games. The outfielder drew a walk in the nightcap, meaning that she retains her 18-game on-base streak.

The Marauders' best chance to do damage in game two came in the fifth inning. Kendra Bumgardner walked and then stole second to put a runner in scoring position for freshman Cara Mazzucco, who came through with an RBI single to left. That cut the deficit to one, but Millersville would edge no closer.

The 'Ville enters conference play in their next appearance on the diamond. They host Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival West Chester for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 18 at 1 & 3 p.m.
